An e-Portfolio is • An information management system that uses electronic media. What do e-Portfolios represent? “e-Portfolios focus on growth and development over time and can be seen as a concrete representation of critical thinking and reflection of skills and achievements; implemented through the selection of evidence for goal setting and self evaluation..” (Barrett, 1999, 2000)
Students Authoring in the Media of their Times : 21st Century Literacy Skills e-Portfolios a digitized self portrait of students as learners. That was then This is now
1. What does the pile of file folders suggest to you about assessment? About the students? 2. What role does the student play? 3. Who were the folders shared with?
Who can we share the e-Portfolio with? What are we assessing? What is the purpose? • 4. What does the diagram to the right suggest to you about a learner centered approach? • 5. How can these be shared? What is now being shared with-in a digitized format? http://members.shaw.ca/technology/assignments/presentation/6whenused.htm Click for more information available on my web site.
Technology enables students to collect and organize more effectively. • Through the use of technology, students can use tools to record their progress over time. • "A culture of evidence asks students to think more deeply about learning to show what they have learned rather than simply choose an answer from a list of multiple choice options.” (Barrett)
The e-Portfolio is a tool to help students: • Think about and plan their future; • Evaluate their progress in conjunction with teachers, parents and counselors; • Identify learning experiences that will help reach their goals; • Demonstrate what they know and can do; • Learn to use, a progressive tool which will be carried forward from year-to-year to recognize vital pieces of their personal, academic, and career development process; and • Record ongoing work and accomplishments on into adulthood.
The e-Portfolio is a tool to help teachers: • Encourage and support best teaching practices and learning opportunities; • Provide a convenient way to collect and sort information that helps students think about where they want to go; • Demonstrate, that outcomes stated in Alberta Learning’s Program of Studies and ICT outcomes and are being met; • Increase student motivation and engagement by connecting learning, to students' personal interests and accomplishments; and • Connect learning to the essential elements of Career Development for students.

Should • 100% complete an e-Portfolio by the end of Grade 12 • 100% complete e-Portfolio in CALM • Each student has artifacts for the 3 categories • 100% goals met as set out by student/teacher/ • Receive 1 credit for completing an e-Portfolio
Barriers to Implementing e-Portfolios Factors Driving the Performance Gap • Know what to do • Able to do • Equipped to do • Want to do Distribute handout
Revisit Example Look at the three categories on this e-Portfolio http://members.shaw.ca/smsedor
Great PERFORMANCE Checklist Distribute Checklist How would you modify this to meet your “need” ?
