  6. TO STAY ON TRACK FOR GRADUATION… You must have at least 18 total credits by the end of this year to be able to graduate on time! Pay close attention during our course selection meetings if you are concerned about having enough credits!

  7. THE PROCESS

  8. Course Selection Process • Review Course Selection Guide • Discuss course options and levels with teachers and parents • Acquire signatures on course selection sheet from 1/31-2/6 • Forms collected in English class on February 7th

COURSE SELECTION • Courses will NOT be scheduled without proper signatures – teachers & parents • Oversubscribe if you’re not sure (sign up for more than 6.5 credits) • Pay attention to pre-requisites—classes will not be scheduled without meeting pre-requisites • SELECT ALTERNATES!! • Students considering co-op or any other specialty program should still choose a full schedule and ALSO apply to the program of their choice

Course Selection Process • Counselors meet individually with students from February through April • Use this chance to ask questions and discuss options regarding your schedule for next year and also for future planning • What else can you do right now to be prepared for your senior year and to get ready for your post-high school plans??

COURSE LEVELS General & Career Prep Weight: 1 – Preparation for the world of work Tech Prep Weight: 2 – Preparation for technical schools/ 2-year colleges College Prep Weight: 3 – Preparation for 4-year college Honors Weight: 4 – Accelerated preparation for 4-year college. Must have a 93% average at end of year in CP course to take Honors level or if already in an Honors course, you must have an 80% in that subject to continue in Honors Advanced Placement Weight: 5 – Follows a prescribed course of study published by the College Board (pay close attention to pre-requisites)

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS Business Family & Consumer Science • Certification classes are 0.5 credit and for one semester • Advanced Accounting III • No Money for Life… • Foods IV (0.5) • All Foods classes are 0.5 credit • Child Development – requires clearances, etc. • Design & Textiles (0.5) PE • YOU WILL NEED PE TEACHER SIGNATURE FOR ALL CHOICES

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS Foreign Language English • No changes • Remember for college bound students, schools prefer to see 2 years of the same language • No changes • Falcon Flash, Yearbook, and Media Magazine – all require application Social Studies, Math, Tech Ed, Reading, Music and Art Science • No changes – see course selection card for complete list • HACC classes also available in SS • AP Science classes are still 1.5 credits, but it will be double period in schedule (with science teacher)

College Courses Social Studies College in the High School • HACC US History 107: The US since 1918 • HACC US History 161: American Civil War & Reconstruction • HACC Military History of WWII • HACC America In Vietnam • Each are semester courses worth 0.5 credit for LDHS • Also available with Mr. James for Advanced Drafting & CAD (1024) • Each course worth 3 HACC credits with C or better • HACC application and fee ($35) • Pay $30 per credit ($90) • Purchase book (about $50) • Sign up on your course selection card to get more information!

KEYSTONE TESTING &SENIOR INCENTIVES IF Basic or Below Basic IF Proficient or Advanced • Re-tested already or in May • If you re-test and score proficient, you can still choose incentives!! • Do not need to re-test • Option of being exempt from current class final (Science, English, Math – with exception of honors) Choose incentives on Course Selection Card – rank them in order of preference (choices honored based on schedule) 1 incentive for for being proficient on two tests 2 incentives for being proficient on three tests • Come in period late OR • Leave period early OR • Preferred parking spot OR • All-events pass OR • Open lunch with study hall

CO-OP WORK EXPERIENCEPROGRAM • Must apply and be accepted into program – grades, attendance, discipline records considered • Application and interview required • School day can end as early as 10:52 • Counts as 2 elective credits • Must be working 15 hours per week (any day of the week) • Must have an approved job • Questions?   23. BUSINESS INTERNSHIP • Must apply and be accepted into program – grades, attendance, discipline records and interview considered • School day can end as early as 10:52 • Career oriented experience in which students serve as interns under supervision of mentor • 10 hours per week (Monday through Friday) • 2.0 credits • Can be paid or unpaid but must be in chosen career field • Questions? DAUPHIN COUNTY TECHNICAL SCHOOLwww.dcts.org Half Day Option • Take core subjects in morning at LD • Spend afternoon at DCTS for elective credits in shop of interest • Offered for most shops-depends on numbers • Fill out DCTS application • Tour the school with your parents • Representative will be here on 2/5/14 at 8:00am – sign up for more information • Transportation not provided!

  25. CAPITAL AREA SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS (CASA) • Site in downtown Harrisburg • Any student is eligible • Visual art, dance, music, theater, media arts, writing • CASA is now a charter school, students would attend for the full school day and would not be LD students while attending • Please go to their website for more information and let me know if you are considering this option! http://www.casa-arts.org

COURSE CHANGES Between now and August… Once school begins… • Contact me to make changes • Schedules mailed home at end of July • Any change except teacher and lunch changes can be made until August 8th • Teacher-initiated academic misplacements • Oversubscription (above 6.5 credits) • Changes may be made until October 24thfor full credit classes. • For semester classes fall or spring, the deadline is mid-marking period (so approx. end of Sept for fall and end of Feb for spring)

  27. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS • Remember that GPA is cumulative • Consider the requirements for the work/schools/colleges you are interested in when you pick your courses • Senior year is NOT the year to relax – it’s the year to work hard!

Timeline… NOW… Career Research! • Do you know how to access your resources? • Naviance…College Board… • Have you looked into any summer programs in your career field of interest? • What do you need help with? • If looking at full time work when you graduate – what kind of work do you want to do and how can you set yourself up for that?? • In the next few months… if you are college bound… consider when/if you will take SATs (March, May, June…) • Also in the next few months…create a list of schools and VISIT!
