  4. Formatting Commands • Commands vs Tab and Spacebar • More efficient • Easier to edit • Paragraph • Place insertion point anywhere in the paragraph or select any part of several paragraphs • Word • Place insertion point anywhere in the word or select exact characters

  5. Formatting Terms • Indent-move away from margin • Hanging Indent—first line of paragraph closer to margin than subsequent lines • Header and Footer—separate from body of document

  6. Formatting Terms • Hard page break—fixed page break inserted by the user • Soft page break—created as text flows to the next page • Horizontal alignment (left, right, center, justify) • Set Tab—defined horizontal position

  7. Style • A collection of formatting commands that can be applied at one time • paragraph styles • character styles • Basis of many automated features in Word • Normal style (default paragraph style) • Built-in heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3)

  12. Default Font • Underlying style for all documents • Must change default to actually change primary font • Open the Font dialog box (CTRL+D) • Select the font and size • Click Default button • Confirm the change

  34. Remove Formatting • Direct formatting—added on top of style • CTRL+Q—removes direct formatting • CTRL+Spacebar—removes character formatting • Reapply Normal style (CTRL+Shift+N)

  35. Troubleshoot Formatting • Display formatting marks (CTRL+Shift+*) • Reveal Formatting task pane (Shift+F1) • Remove formatting (CTRL+Q or CTRL+Spacebar)

  36. Troubleshoot Formatting • To remove excessive white space, look for Space before, Space after, Keep with next or Start new page • Undo (CTRL+Z) immediately following unwanted format change
