  2. Objectives: • To describe and explain the weather associated with anticyclones • To understand the reasons why they occur • To compare and contrast the differences between a summer and winter anticyclone

  3. What is an anticyclone? • An anticyclone is an area of high pressure caused by descending air. • As air moves downwards, it heats up at about 1° C per 100 metres. • Any water vapour present spreads out, resulting in a warm, dry air mass over the land.

  4. Because this air is falling it is pushing downwards – HIGH PRESSURE • This also means that there are very few clouds because all the water vapour is falling to ground level Q1 Describe the features of an anticyclone Q2 Explain why there are few clouds during anticyclonic conditions

  5. The features of an anticyclone • High pressure • Sinking air, so few clouds • Winds blow clockwise • Often affects the whole country (very large) • May last several days Differences and similarities between summer and winter - moviemaker

The weather during an anticyclone • Summer • Fine settled weather • Light winds • Hot, Sunny weather with clear skies, often heat wave conditions. • Some times morning dew (water vapour condenses on ground) Q4.
