  2. How to avoid plagiarism • To avoid plagiarism, all students must document sources properly using Footnotes, Endnotes, or References, and must write a Bibliography. It should be at the end of the research paper to list the sources used. • Make sure that keep accurate records of all the sources you use for your assignments. • Check to see which type of documentation is preferred by your teacher.

  3. *Paraphrasing and quoting* • Paraphrasing is when your read a passage and rewrite it in your own words. Since its someone else's work you are getting your information from it would be a good idea to add a source. • Quoting means to copy or use the exact same words from where you are working and use it in your own work. When quoting use should use quotation marks – “”

How to paraphrase a source • When paraphrasing a source you should read the whole text instead of just rewriting everything in your own words every time you read a sentence from the original text. • Be selective. Don’t just copy everything. Read through the text and find the most important points to use.

  5. Successful and unsuccessful paraphrasing • Successful Successful paraphrasing is when your whole essay is written in your own words but you’ve still used the help of someone else's work. • Unsuccessful This would be when it is obvious you didn’t do the work yourself and your sentence structure would be very similar to the source you are using.

  6. How to Quote a Source • Introducing a quotation. When you are about use a quote you should introduce it, for example if you said ‘this is a quote by …’ This is called a signal • An assertion indicates the relationship between the quote and your text.

Essay Writing These are useful steps to use when writing an essay…. • Research – to find out about more your subject • Brainstorming - what ideas you have for your essay • Introduction – this is where you introduce what you are going to be talking about. It should grab the readers attention and make them want to keep reading. • Paragraphs – each paragraph should be focused on a different idea. • Conclusion – this is the part where you summarize all your main points and end your essay
