Penalties for plagiarism • Minimal plagiarism (10% or under)– up to 10 marks deducted from assignment • Major plagiarism/unfair means – all cases will be passed on to the faculty who will deal with them. Consequences can be sever, including 1) Zero for the module 2) Overall grade or particular module component can be capped at 40 The department does not make a decision about penalties arising from major plagiarism/unfair means cases.

What is plagiarism? • Copying a paragraph word by word from a source without any acknowledgement • Copying a paragraph and making small changes - e.g. replacing a few verbs, replacing an adjective with a synonym, no quotation marks; acknowledgement in the bibliography • Quoting a paragraph by placing it in block format with the source cited in text & bibliography • Cutting and pasting a paragraph by using sentences of the original but omitting one or two and putting one or two in a different order, no quotation marks; with an in-text acknowledgement plus bibliography • Composing a paragraph by taking short phrases from a number of sources and putting them together using words of your own to make a coherent whole with an in-text acknowledgement plus bibliography. • Paraphrasing a paragraph by rewriting with substantial changes in language and organisation; the new version will also have changes in the amount of detail used and the examples cited; citation in the text & bibliography

If in doubt use quotes • Format quotes according to assessment guide • Cite source and page number • If paragraph – indent from main body of text • But remember, quotes do not get you marks If you are not sure about referencing, please refer to the APA manual or ask your personal tutor for advice.
