  1. Welcome to 5th Grade Mrs. Bard Mrs. Hundemer Mrs. Tharp Mrs. Petrella Ms. Mulholland

  2. Mrs. Bard 7h year @ Mercer 2st year in 5th grade, taught 4th grade previously Graduated from NKU worked in business world for 12 years Married to Clint Bard & have 2 kids. Drew & Katelyn both are at Anderson High School.

  3. Mrs. Hundemer Teaching for 21 years (have taught 5th grade previously & other grades as well as special education.) Graduated from NKU with BS & MED Married to John and have two sons. Brendan is a 2nd grader & Michelle is a 3rd grader.

  4. Mrs. Tharp *Teaching for 13 years & @ Mercer for 8 Graduated from Ball State w/ BS & Xavier for MED Married to Clay & have 2 girls: Emma is 5 years old & Ava is 3 years old.

  5. LANGUAGE ARTS SPELLING • New spelling words every week. • Pretest on Monday, post test on Friday • Will work on patterns in class • Up to student to study words at home. WRITING • 6+1 Writing Traits • Writers Notebook • Some pieces will be Narrative, Expository, Persuasive • GRAMMAR • Big focus on grammar this year! • variety of lessons on different parts of speech • lessons connect while transitioning to Common Core Standards • all grammar work will be done in 3 subject spiral notebook & grammar packets.

  6. READING INDEPENDENT • BINGO (must have passing AR scores for each book on BINGO board.) • 5 Think Marks • Pre-write • Summary • Book Activity IN CLASS • Variety of novels & Reading Street will be used • Focus on different reading skills, (ie: comprehension, vocabulary, compare/contrast, authors purpose, etc) • Transition year – Common Core & state standards

  7. MATH • Math Message each day will be a Daily Word Problem. • Daily Math Practice (DMP). Your child may work ahead. Quiz every other Friday. • Shifting to the Common Core curriculum-will use Investigations and other resources to meet the standards. • Math Daily 5 as part of our enrichment, intervention, and differentiation of math instruction. • Math Challenge-Each week your child has the opportunity to earn extra credit by completing the math challenge problems. There are four problems each week. These are due on Friday morning. This is OPTIONAL!

  8. SCIENCE • We will be using both text in order to meet the state standards. • Interactive Science is very hands on. • Students will start their year w/ an intro. about what Scientists do, tools they use & safety measures. • Earth/Space Science: Learn about the sun & other stars, Moon, Seasons, & Planets • Life Science: learn about Ecosystems, food webs, food chains, food pyramid • Physical Science: Learn about Motion & Forms of Energy

  9. SOCIAL STUDIES • Social Studies is a new interactive & hands on program (History Alive). It has a strong technology component. • Students will learn about: Geography, Mid-Evil times, & birth of America • You will be able to access the textbook on line. Go to learntci.com. Your child’s password it FH and their lunch number.

  11. CAMP KERN • www.campkern.org • MAY 12-14 • Outdoor education includes 4 main areas of study – fossils, field and forest, pond life, and pioneer life. In addition to these core study areas, children also engaging in other activities such as canoeing, hiking, playing various games, and singing campfire songs. 5th graders LOVE it and come home completely exhausted!
