  4. 5th grade schedule-Mrs. Dunn’s class *Arrival 8:00-8:20 Specials 8:20-9:00 Science 9:05-10:00 (Science Lab on Mondays) Snack/restroom break 10:00-10:10 AM Literacy/math 10:10-11:40 Recess/Lunch 11:45-12:25 PM Literacy/math 12:25-1:55 *Recess/Detention 2:00-2:15 *Social Studies (with Mrs. Walter) 2:20-3:20 (Library on Tuesdays) clean up/ carpool 3:20- “all call”

  5. What’s special about 5th grade? Field trips: • Highlands Ranch pioneer days (9/6) • Ballet- Don Quixote (10/3) • Ameritowne* (11/20) • Civil War Reenactment* (spring) *large portion covered by mill levy funds

Preparing for middle school! • Welcome to the “West Wing” • administrator- Mr. Rau • commons in am • transition year • elementary- specials, class parties • middle school- location, administration • blend of both- • assemblies & pep rallies • modified period schedule

  7. What’s special about 5th grade? Teaching & instruction • specializing teachers • depth of content • teaching/learning styles • technology integration • chromebooks in classroom • safeguards • help where it’s needed most • study hall built in to math block

  8. How can I help my child succeed? • Use Tools: • Friday emails • Gradelink/ grade alerts • Website/ Homework calendar • Know Policies: • Late work (10% per day to 50%) • Dress code (recorded in gradelink)

Fall • Basic chemistry: atoms, periodic table, properties of matter, separating mixtures Winter • Earth Science: changing earth surfaces, energy resources, review weather* Spring • Life Science: cells, classification, human body systems*, plants • Science Fair (May 12)

What does a typical science day look like Journal prompt • recap previous day’s learning; clarify misunderstandings, good for test prep lesson • combination of slides, text, video clips (Sample current lesson to follow) activity • hands-on learning: sometimes activity is used first to generate inquiry-based instruction lab/library day • science mystery

  12. How do I help with science? Science Lab & Science Fair • volunteer- Mrs. Ward • student project vs. parent showcase Homework/ classwork • very little homework • absent? use homework/classwork calendar- often has active links Test prep • science journals • Kahoots

  13. Procedures/ Final Reminders • Planners: a student tool, not teacher tool • dockets/folders- green is science, purple is to go home • Absences • check homework calendar first • email me for clarifications • Early pick up? (not recommended) • Office closes at 3 • classes go until 3:20

  15. Math- Saxon 5 Saxon Math components: • Facts practice and tests • mental math • problem solving • incremental learning (doubles) • regular, repeated practice (all 30) • frequent assessments Sample Math lesson (Taught on Wednesday)...

  16. How can I help? Use resources • classwork/homework calendar • all lessons on website • answer keys also on website (password protected)

Homework Reminders (from BFA handbook) Absence policies:. • Two days given for each day missed. • No work pick up (drop in) during the school day. • Extended absence/vacations gather work upon return. Late work policies: • 10% per day to 50% (doubles next year) • detentions allow students the opportunity to get it done
