Advantages and Disadvantages • Northern supporters believed they were fighting to preserve the Union • Southern supporters believed they were fighting to preserve their way of life. (No mention of slavery yet!)
Advantages • Southerners believed that their more rural way of life would better prepare soldiers for war. • Many Southerners hunted and were familiar with weapons. • The South also had a history of producing military leaders.
Advantages • The Northern states produced more than 90 percent of the country’s weapons, cloth, shoes, and iron. • The North also produced more than half of the country’s corn and 80 percent of wheat. • The Union also had far more railroads, canals and roads to move supplies and troops. • The Union also spent more than double the money on the war than the South!
Strategies • Winfield Scott planned a strategy with three parts to help the North win the war. • The first part was a blockade of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the Confederacy. (A blockade is the shutting off of an area by troops or ships). • The second part was to capture the Mississippi River and split the Southern states in two. • The third part was to attack the South from both east and west. (Squeeze the South like an anaconda!)
Strategies • The Confederate government had its own plan for victory. • First, it believed that the South only had to defend its territory until the North got tired and gave up. (Defensive Battle) • Second the South believed that Britain would assist it in the war because British clothing mills depended on Southern cotton.
Early Battles • Early battles were fought in the north, and many of these were won by the South. • Antietam was an important victory for the Union. After defeating the South, Great Britain ended its support for the Southern States.

Technology and War • The Civil War was the first Modern War. • Soldiers used rifles that could shoot farther and more accurately than guns used in previous wars. • Railroads moved troops and supplies more quickly. • Confederates even built several submarines! • Ironclad, iron covered ships, that cannon balls bounced off of • These new technologies resulted in huge numbers of deaths and casualities!
