  1. Student Goal Setting Using MAP Data Organized by Glenna Carter & Douglas Wilson Farristown Middle School

  2. Agenda – I can… • Look at MAP Scores and… • Identify class overview of reading, math and language RIT scores. • Identify academic strengths. • Identify areas for improvement . • Set GOAL S for MAP testing winter 2011 and Spring 2012. • Develop Action Plans for meeting goals.

  3. This shows TYPICAL growth from FALL scores through the end of the year. 1. Have students look up what RIT score means on grade level. (Use Normative Data Chart) 3. Set reasonable but challenging goal for Spring MAP test. 2. Have students note their strongest areas (in BOLD) and their areas for improvement (in italics). Note change/growth. 4. Develop ACTION PLAN for addressing areas that need improvement. (See Action Plan options that follow)

A Few ‘Action Plan’ Options • Reading • Read more challenging books • Vocabulary - look up words you don’t know, use them in a sentence. • Read different genres • Read the newspaper • Use reading skills in EVERY class • SOAR • Re-read text and test questions carefully. Ask self what the question is asking you. • Look for key words – POWER VERBS! • Use context clues to understand possible meanings. • Eliminate answers you are certain are incorrect. • Less TV, cell phone, computer – more reading • RIT Band Games

  5. Have students note their strongest areas and their areas for improvement. Note change/growth. Develop ACTION PLAN for addressing areas that need improvement. (See Action Plan options that follow.)

  6. A Few ‘Action Plan’ Options • Math • Read ALL parts of a question FIRST. Don’t skip sections/steps • Double check answers and make sure they are reasonable. • Check reference guides • Explain rationale for solutions • Know/learn key vocabulary • Use scratch paper • Use rubrics • RIT Band Games • Carnegie Learning

Accessing RIT Band Games • Go to the MAP Reading Resources http://www.sowashco.k12.mn.us/ro/pages/studentlinks/map/reading.htm • OR Math Resources • http://www.sowashco.k12.mn.us/ro/pages/studentlinks/map/ • Select the specific RIT range • Select a game to play • Keep track of your RIT score and games you play on the MAP
