ADA Compliance of bathrooms in Life Sciences West at Oklahoma State University The Horsemen (Nichols, Smith, and Collier)
Introduction • Despite Oklahoma State University’s (OSU) dedication to being ADA compliant, is there still room for improvement? • Life Sciences West (LSW) = 6 floors & 8 bathrooms • Most are not compliant
Today’s Presentation • OSU & ADA compliance • LSW ADA compliant bathrooms • Effects of not having ADA compliant bathrooms
Research Question & Hypothesis • Research Question: Do people think the bathrooms in Life Sciences West are or are not handicap accessible? • Hypothesis: People will agree that the bathrooms in LSW are not handicap accessible and will want to fix the issue.
Primary Research Methods(Empirical) • 38 Surveys • 6 Professors • 1 Post Doc • 10 Grad Students • 1 Staff Member • 20 Students • Interviewed • 1 Physical Plant Employee • 1 Physically Challenged LSW Student
Secondary Research Methods(Electronic & Print) • Used the library database and found journals, magazines, and other printed resources with information on ADA compliance with regard to bathrooms • Key phrases: “handicap friendly schools” & “non-ADA compliant schools”
Secondary Research Results(print) • Of the department of justice ADA accessibility guidelines for buildings and facilities • Section 4.13 • Section 4.17
Secondary Research Results(Electronic) • Non-ADA compliant bathrooms are not just a problem at OSU • Guidelines for “Grand-fathered” buildings • Handicap friendly colleges • Easy to install handicap wall switches
Discussion • Bathrooms in Life Sciences West are not in compliance with the ADA Standards. • Puts OSU at risk for the possibility of being sued for discrimination, and it gives our university a bad reputation. • OSU’s enrollment is suffering because they are not bringing in the students with disabilities.
Recommendation • Renovations should include, the following: • Wall switches to all doors • Constructing light-weight bathroom doors • Wider, more efficient bathroom stalls with doors that open outward and automatically swing shut.
