  2. PLATO – the first to state the world was round. The only shape that is perfect is a circle. The Earth must be perfect, so, it must be round.

  3. ARISTOTLE Proved the Earth was round by…… Observing the shadow of the Earth crossing across the moon.

  4. HIPPARCHUS He developed the grid system we know today as longitude and latitude. Lines were not even. They were based on natural features.

  5. ERASTOSTHONES Estimated the circumference of the Earth using geometry. He came within a few hundred miles of being correct.

  6. PTOLMEY Compiled known maps of the world to create the first atlas at the library in Alexandria, Egypt. He called his atlas the “Guide to Geography. He also straightened out Hipparchus’s longitude and latitude lines.
