  2. Persuasion • Definition: A means of persuading someone to do or believe something; an argument or inducement. • Synonym: Influence

  4. The Argument • Claim: writer’s position on a problem or an issue • Support: the reasons and evidence that back up the claim • Counterarguments: attempts to answer those objections with a viewpoint

  5. Persuasive Techniques Appeals to people’s needs, values, and feelings

  6. Rhetorical Language • Language that is elaborate, pretentious, insincere, or intellectually vacuous • In a nutshell: language that is showy but empty • Example: a rhetorical question • A question not meant to be answered but to be thought about

Fallacies • Statements or arguments based on false or invalid inference; incorrect reasoning or belief • Logical fallacy: is an error in reasoning • Example: “Either I watch TV, or I have nothing to do” • Rhetorical fallacy: is speech or writing that is false or misleading • For example: it’s misleading to decide a corrupt politician as “just an average guy’
