  2. Chapter 27 • Written in first person from D.B.’s point of view

  3. As I was driving to the sanitarium to meet my little brother for lunch, I was thinking about my new screenplay and how Holden would hate it. He hates anything that even remotely resembles something that is fake or “phony” as he likes to call it. Thinking about Holden always depresses me, I mean, just the thought of him sitting in a little cell with that dumb straight jacket on that they always manage to include in every single movie these days. I try to never create a character that reminds me of my little brother, its just too sad. My brother has the potential to be a great person, he just got lost somewhere along the way. I mean, he has the tendency to want to fight time and keep innocence and the world as he visualizes it, from changing. If only Holden had the determination to follow things through and care about something, he would be great as a person. Actually, it’s not as bad as it could be, considering all that he has been through. For god sakes Allie died when Holden was just thirteen years old. You can’t really expect a person to live a normal life once they have a mindset like Holden’s. Well, maybe if this whole psychoanalysis thing goes well, he will gain the habits that he needs and he can get out of that place.

  4. When I really think about, it my brother’s life has been pretty rough on him, giving him the horrible thoughts of depression that he suffers. I mean, first of all, his grades suck. He flunked four of five subjects, I know that he could pass anything he wanted to if he just applied himself. He really isn’t that stupid, I mean, as long as he cares about something, he will pour his whole heart and soul into it. He also has a fantastic memory, he could recite his whole story about that life altering weekend including descriptions and exact quotes. Second, he’s been kicked out of plenty of schools and he has no real friends. When my brother flunks school, it makes him feel unwanted because it’s like nobody wants him and it makes him feel displaced in the world. Holden also finds that most things are phony after his brother’s death. I walked into the sanitarium, heading for the cafeteria, I didn’t even bother to check in, everybody knew who I was. I sat down across from Holden. He whispered, “I need to get out of this crumby place.” “Why?” He snapped at me, “I’m gonna get a damn job.” “What? What the hell makes you think that you can hold down a job? And what kind of job do you think you could get? Nobody would want to hire you.” It is not that I was mad, I was just worried, but the fact that he wanted to get a job was a huge improvement. Even so, I think he should stay here until the people who work here decide that he is ready to deal with the real world.

  5. “I want to get a job in a museum. I want to be the night security guy.” “Why? I know that you like the museum, but why night security guy?” “I want to be there so I can look at all the happy moments that are stuck where they are. I mean, I can clean up the damn walls, get rid of all the “fuck you” that are written and carved and all.” “That’s the only reason Holden? Well, it’s a great start, but I think that you should stay here for a little while longer, you may not be fully prepared yet.” Honestly, I think he can get through this recovery period and be prepared for everything that life is full of, it will just take some time. “Ok Holden I have to go now but stay positive, you are improving.” “Ok see you later D.B.” After our little discussion I headed back to my car and started thinking about how Holden’s future may look. I could tell already that he was getting excited to leave the institution and get back into the real world, I only hope that he doesn’t relapse. His excitement toward the museum is a good start for him even though it’s not exactly what I would have chosen as a career. I can tell that if his treatment keeps improving his outlook on life, Holden will be much happier. Perhaps he may even get out of this place to go to college and get a girl, those will be two huge steps in the right direction for him. Things are looking much better for him.
