  1. Physical Properties

  2. Describing Matter • Knowing the characteristics or properties of an object can help you identify the object. • There are: • Physical Properties • Chemical Properties

  3. Physical Properties • Things that describe the object are physical properties. • Physical properties can also be observed or measured without changing the identity of the matter. • Examples of physical properties include: color, odor, size, state, density, solubility, melting point, etc…

  4. Spotlight on Density • Density is a very helpful physical property. • Density = mass per unit of volume or Density = mass/volume • Density is an excellent help in identifying substances because each substance has its own density.

  5. If Density = mass/volume • Then mass = volume x density or m = v x d • AND volume = mass/density or volume = m V

  6. Physical Properties • Physical properties can be observed without changing the identity of the substance.

  7. What are some examples of physical properties? Shape Mass Color Volume Texture Physical Properties

  8. Physical Properties can be observed or measured • Your senses can be used to identify some basic physical properties. • What are some of these?

  9. Physical Properties can be observed or measured • State is a physical property that you can observe. • What are the three common states? • Solid • Liquid • Gas

  10. Physical Properties can be measured • Melting and boiling point can be measured. • How would you describe melting point? • How about boiling point?

  11. What are some other physical properties that can be measured? Strength Hardness Magnetism Physical Properties can be measured

  12. What do physical properties determine? • They determine uses for the item. • Ex.-aluminum for foil, clean socks, clothes match, etc.

  13. Physical Changes • A physical change is a change that affects one or more physical properties of a substance. • Physical changes do not form new substances! EX: ice melting or sugar dissolving • Physical changes are easy to undo.
