WBS 6.3.2 Global Mechanics Outer Cylinder

This document provides an overview of the technical challenges and risks associated with the Mechanics Outer Cylinder for the US ATLAS HL-LHC CD-3a Review in July 2019. The Outer Cylinder serves as the main vessel for housing other ITk assemblies, with major interfaces including IWV, Strip Shell Layer-3, and Structural Bulkhead. The document highlights the fabrication risk, material composition, and various functions of the Outer Cylinder including gas seal, faraday cage, and thermal barrier.

  2. Deliverable Overview The Outer Cylinder is the main vessel that houses other ITk assemblies. The major interfaces to the OC are the IWV, the outer-most Strip Shell Layer-3, and Structural Bulkhead. • The OC is required at CERN relatively early in development to begin integration of other assemblies. • The OC is made from 3 similarly sized cylinders to reduce fabrication risk • The OC is made from CN60 high modulus carbon fiber. • Serves as gas seal and faraday cage • Serves as thermal barrier (heaters) • No active cooling US ATLAS HL-LHC CD-3a Review, July 9-11, 2019

  3. Technical Challenges • Cylinder is thin and has tight tolerances • The flanges have complex layups and flatness requirements • The overall assembly is very large US ATLAS HL-LHC CD-3a Review, July 9-11, 2019
