First Televised Presidential Debate • Nixon (Republican) vs. Kennedy (Democrat) • Most viewers who watched on TV said JFK won the debate while people who listened on the radio favored Nixon. • Debate: turning point in the election? • TV: became the new way politicians chose to address the nation (changed politics forever)

  3. The 1960 Election • Some questioned if JFK had enough experience to be president (43 years old) and if his religious beliefs (Catholic) would interfere with his politics. • Kennedy won by a VERY narrow victory so did not have a strong mandate(public endorsement of his proposals)—without a mandate it’s hard to get controversial measures through Congress.

  5. Kennedy’s Domestic Programs • “The New Frontier”: JFK’s proposal to improve the economy, assist the poor, and speed up the space program. • Civil Rights: JFK was hesitant to fully support at first but the extreme violence (especially in the deep South) forced action.
