First Televised Presidential Debate • Nixon (Republican) vs. Kennedy (Democrat) • Most viewers who watched on TV said JFK won the debate while people who listened on the radio favored Nixon. • Debate: turning point in the election? • TV: became the new way politicians chose to address the nation (changed politics forever)
The 1960 Election • Some questioned if JFK had enough experience to be president (43 years old) and if his religious beliefs (Catholic) would interfere with his politics. • Kennedy won by a VERY narrow victory so did not have a strong mandate(public endorsement of his proposals)—without a mandate it’s hard to get controversial measures through Congress.
President John F. Kennedy • JFK: 43 years old (youngest president to be elected) and first Catholic president. • JFK came into office with confidence and energy. • Camelot and the Kennedy Mystique • Infidelities and Affairs
Kennedy’s Domestic Programs • “The New Frontier”: JFK’s proposal to improve the economy, assist the poor, and speed up the space program. • Civil Rights: JFK was hesitant to fully support at first but the extreme violence (especially in the deep South) forced action.
JFK: Foreign Policy in the Early 1960s • We will be talking about the following topics when we get to Section 22.3: • Bay of Pigs Invasion • The Berlin Crisis • Cuban Missile Crisis • Alliance for Progress • The Peace Corps
The Assassination of JFK • November 22, 1963- JFK and wife rode through downtown Dallas in an open limo to gain support for the 1964 election • During the parade, JFK was shot and killed by Lee Harvey Oswald • America’s Response: Shocked and Shattered! • VP Johnson: New President • Warren Commission: investigated JFK’s assassination • Conspiracy Theory?
What do YOU think? • What was the main message behind JFK’s inaugural address? Why do you think he urged patriotism over personal interest? • What are some similarities between JFK and Barrack Obama? What are some differences? • Do you think there is any truth behind the JFK’s assassination conspiracy theory? Explain your answer. • Why do you think JFK typically ranks high on many of the “Greatest American Presidents” lists?
