5 Ecosystem Components: • Hydrology • Geomorphology • Biology • Connectivity • Water Quality
Ecosystem Research Needs • How to combine recommendations for the 5 ecosystem components (hydrology, geomorphology, biology, connectivity, water quality). • Improve the understanding of the effect of controlling factor changes on watersheds. • Improve the understanding of the role of intermediate and high flows in watersheds and river valleys. • How to deal with connectivity issues between watersheds and sub-watersheds; spatial, temporal, trophic. • Develop relationships between riparian vegetation and hydrologic regime, channel stability, habitat. • How to validate instream flow studies on an watershed scale: adaptive management, long term monitoring.
Biological Research Needs • Develop habitat suitability data for a wider range of species (both aquatic and riparian) along with multiple species assemblages over a wide range of conditions - what limits populations over all seasons? • What are the relationships between habitat and production? • How do flows stimulate fish migrations? What flows are needed? • Develop verification that mesohabitat data is as good as microhabitat instream flow data - What scale is best? • Develop tools that measure deepwater and ice covered habitat conditions • How do you incorporate bioenergetics data into flow needs?
Biological Research Needs • What are the effects of hydropower peaking operations on biota and on channel morphology? • Ramping • Habitat • Migration • What is the relationship of benthic invertebrate production to flows • Microhabitat relationships • Time scale relationships (i.e. annual fluctuation in production) • Incubation flow needs • Winter habitat selection and behavior
Biological Response • How to really do adaptive management with flow regimes? What to measure? What sort of long term monitoring should be done? • IFC members are establishing flow regimes at projects all the time. Is this stuff working?
