  3. Understanding the Application Process • Current application deadline for students starting Block 1 in Spring 2012 is October 17, 2011. • Application deadline for Fall 2012 will be in February 2012 (TBA.) • 50 seats available.

  4. Application Criteria • Completion of 55 semester hours; including current semester. (no developmental courses) • EDUC-F200 with a C or better. • SPCH-S121 with a C or better. • ENG-W131 with a C or better. • MATH-T101 with a C or better . • IUS GPA 2.5. CANNOT Apply with a C- in any application course! Continued…

Application Criteria Successful completion of ONE course from theSocial Studies Content Block (D- or higher) Elementary: • ECON-E100, E150, or E101 (Economics) • GEOG-G201 (World Regional Geography) • SOC-R220 (The Family) • HSIT-H105 or H106 (American History I or II) • POLS-Y103 (Introduction to American Politics) • HIST-H101 (World in the 20th Century) Special Education: • POLS-Y103, Y107, Y109 (Political Science) • HIST-H105, H106 (American History) or GEOG-G110 (Human Geography) • SOC-S163 (Social Problems) or GEOG-G201 (World Regional Geography)

  6. Application Criteria Successful completion of ONE course from the Science Content Block (D- or higher.) Elementary: • BIOL-L100 (Humans & the Biological World) • CHEM-C104 (Physical Science & Society) • GEOG-G107 (Physical Systems of the Environment) Special Education: • BIOL-L100 (Humans & the Biological World) • CHEM-C104 (Physical Science & Society) or CHEM-C101 (Elementary Chemistry I) NOTE:ONE science course must include a lab as general ed. requirement.

  7. GPA and PRAXIS 1 Scores Elementary and Special Education IUS GPA of at least a 2.5 Must have attempted the Praxis I Math 175 Reading 176 Writing 172 …continued

Alternative Scores • Praxis 1 composite 527 • ACT with a score of at least 24 based on Math, Reading, Grammar, and Science • SAT with a score of at least 1100 based on Verbal, and Math • GRE with a score of at least 1100 based on Verbal and Quantitative • Anyone with a Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution is exempt.

  9. Taking the Praxis 1 • Paper and Pencil Test (approx. $170) - Offered at IUS - Scores available within 6 weeks • Computer-based Test (approx. $130) - Prometric Testing Center on LaGrange Road, Louisville (423-0478) - University of Louisville (852-6607) • Writing scores available in approximately 2 weeks. • Praxis can be taken once each calendar month, no more than six times during any one calendar year. • Praxis Scores are available on-line for two months, so be sure and save as a PDF.

  11. Studying for the Praxis • Study guides for the Praxis are also available in the Library. • Praxis Registration Information brochures for 2011-12 are available on the wall outside the Student Development Center.

  12. What does it mean…Getting into Blocks? You won’t be taking any other general education courses while in blocks. • Block 1 – Child as Learner • Block 2 – The Literate Child • Block 3– Specific Methods • Block 4– Student Teaching • Special Education students will take 1 summer block.

  13. Field Experience • ALLblocks include field experience at specific schools both in Indiana and Kentucky. • It is MANDATORY for students to be available Monday through Friday from 8:00 – 4:00!

  14. Once I’m in……then what? • Continue taking courses that are requirements for your degree! • Keep a close eye on your GPA! • Faculty may review a student’s status at any point in the program! • If you need to e-mail anyone, please include your student ID number! • See your SOE faculty advisor at least once a semester!
