  1. Cultural Studies (5) Taiwan’s Cases of Popular Culture

  2. Questions • What is popular culture? • How do you define “Taiwanese” popular music? Does listening to popular culture have anything to do with our sense of identity? • What issues are involved our faddism? Our pursuit of the Japanese cultures or the Korean ones?

  3. Popular Culture • Culture of the people – 庶民文化; sub-cultures, working-class culture, practice of everyday life; • “Popular” culture – 流行文化 ( 文化工業) • vs. high arts

  5. Popular Culture –Taiwan’s music industry as an example • American, “Chinese folksong” = taste=identity, 熱門音樂/美軍電台 vs. 靡靡之音;民歌運動 (singer-writers) • Hegemony -- 音樂工業 since 1980’s • 民歌手專業化、商品化 e.g. 羅大佑-音樂工廠 in Hong Kong; • 偶像歌手;1989 小虎隊 • 口水歌 • 歌手國際化-- 1989 崔健, 1992 LA Boyz • 1990: KVT; 1991: Tower Records in Taiwan.

  6. Japanese cultures in Taiwan • Different types of Hot-Japan—年紀大一點受日語教育,親日派 ; .漫畫迷、電玩迷對漫畫電玩喜歡 ;喜歡日本製造的東西 • Taiwan’s sense of Identity; • Transculturalism –the travel of culture

  7. Taiwan’s sense of Identity • For your reference: • 遲恒昌: 哈日族意外地成了一面鏡子,折射出台灣國族認同的焦慮與錯綜複雜。

  11. From Cultural Colonization to de-colonization? • Japanization of Asia (reasons: capital domination, new middle class, proximity) • Local support: media (e.g. newspaper columns)  食衣住行都是日式; • De-colonization—how?
