  2. Gravity Water Supply Design

  3. Introduction Background Water For People: WFP Mission, community Provide clean water and sanitation Documentation of completed projects Current design tool No standard design procedure Hard coded values: difficult to modify

  4. Introduction (cont.) • Improvements • Standardized design • Set inputs, automated calculations • More user-friendly • Benefits: Water For People, Engineers, Cornell students • Work Plan and Team Organization • Assigned tasks • Responsible team member • Schedule: task deadlines

  5. Objectives • Create a technical spreadsheet to be used in designing rural water supply systems: • Standardized • User friendly • Easily modified

  6. Anticipated Benefits • How • optimize cost/materials (more efficient) • universal (easy to use) • improved results (more accurate and extensive) • Who • Engineers • Water for People • EWF/Future Students

  7. Background • Water For People • History • Safe Drinking Water • Spreadsheets • EWF • Design Tool

  8. Work Plan: Tasks to be Completed • Review and understand the spreadsheets that are currently available to us • Decide: Make modifications or start from scratch? • Create actual spreadsheet design tool • Test the spreadsheet with various data

  9. Work Plan (cont.) • Maintain communication with NGO’s, asking questions and getting feedback • Document the creation process, producing a guide that describes how to use the tool • Predict possible challenges, modify plan if necessary • Create Final Report

  10. Project Planning/Schedule

  11. Team Organization • Water Supply Systems – Dr. M. Weber-Shirk • Hydraulics • Spreadsheet Design • James Berg, Dawn Sedorovich, Lindsay Ellis, Tracy Wise, Meaghan O’Neil, Amy Pickering, Jen Talotta, and Stephanie Arbelovsky • Spanish • Dawn Sedorovich, Meaghan O’Neil, Leah de Riel, Luke Miller • Capital Budgeting • Leah de Riel , Luke Miller, and James Berg • Technical Writing • Kelly Saikkonen, Leah de Riel, and Tracy Wise

  12. Resources • Water for People • Agua Para El Pueblo • 12 Engineering Students • Cornell – • academic resources • Expert advisors • Computer/software access • Lab space
