  5. What is the 100K Homes Campaign? • A movement of communities with the shared aim of finding and housing 100,000 of the most long-term and vulnerable homeless people in America by July 2013

Vulnerability Index More than 6 months homeless AND at least one of the following: End Stage Renal Disease History of Cold Weather Injuries Liver Disease or Cirrhosis HIV+/AIDS Over 60 years old 3 or more emergency room visits in prior three months 3 or more ER or hospitalizations in prior year Tri-morbid (mentally ill+ abusing substances+ chronic medical problem) 10

Memphis Homeless Population • Number homeless on Jan. 24th 2012 (PIT): 2076 • Unsheltered has increased from 83 in 2008 to 326 in 2012 • Chronically homeless increased from 53 in 2009 to 255 in 2012 • PSH units designed to address rising chronic homelessness increased by 155% • Those most in need are unable to access our housing units.

  18. Roles of Proofreaders • Check each survey for legibility and completeness • Work with interviewer to resolve any issues • Notify Team Leader when all are complete, and Team is ready for de-briefing

  19. Roles of Picture Downloaders • Official laptops will be set up at front tables • Work with Headquarters Volunteer to download and name photos • Delete from cameras once saved to laptops • Will need to bring surveys with you for naming saved photos correctly

  20. Roles of Muses • Post or Tweet about your Team’s experiences • Share your feelings and experiences with the world! • Don’t share confidential information or survey participant photos • Post on Facebook - 100K HOMES Memphis 100!

  25. Steps in the Process • Explain Consent and Obtain Signatures • What to do if someone refuses • Survey • Take Photo(s) of Person and ID/Paperwork • Provide Info Regarding Programs and Services •  Provide $5 McDonalds Gift Card •  Take a Photo of Person then Photo of Survey •  Mark Your Map

  26. Surveying Do’s • Introduce yourself and explain what you are doing • Be sincere and thank people for their time • Remain calm and de-escalate any tense situations

  27. Surveying Do’s • Keep aware of your surroundings • Stay out of tight or enclosed spaces • Maintain appropriate distance • Honor requests to not participate, to skip questions, to not have photos taken

  28. Surveying Do’s • Provide people with fast food gift card and resources information • Approach if uncertain about homelessness • Dress appropriately, wear bright-colored or white clothing, comfortable shoes, not too many accessories

  29. Surveying Do’s • Carry ID and a cell phone with you, but leave other valuables behind • Check with Team Leader and refer to the contact numbers provided if you need assistance of any kind

  30. Surveying Don’ts • Touch people to wake them up • Invade personal space • Mandate participation in the survey or photos • Panic • Put anyone in danger • Be judgmental • Promise housing or services

  31. Surveying Don’ts • Give money or offer rides • Deviate from the survey • Separate from your team • Use fancy technology (e.g., iPhones) in front of survey respondents • Wear all black • Share any confidential info or photos of participants

Key Points to Explain • Asking questions about health and housing • Participation is voluntary • Will ask for SSN and for permission to take photos • Can skip any questions • $5 food card as thanks • Information will be stored and kept safe • Information will be shared based on their agreement • Persons receiving info will treat it confidentially

  41. Consents • Agree to participate • Agree that information may be shared for purposes of follow-up contact and/or for planning services and housing • Agree that information may be shared for performing research activities

  42. Photo Consents Can come back to ask about photo consent signatures at end of survey • Agree that photo can be taken and saved • Agree that photo can be used in public materials • Agree that photos can be taken of ID / paperwork
