  1. WATER QUALITY VULNERABILITY OF THE LEPENCI RIVER BASIN T. ARBNESHI , L. BEQA & I. Zuzaku, UNIVERSITY OF PRISHTINA

  2. INTRODUCTION Lepenci River has its water-collecting beginning in potential mountainous surface about 29 km2 of Sharri Mountain in Firajë village of Shtërpcë municipality. Spring part (mountainous part) of the rivers flow has high water quality, and it belongs to the first category of the surface waters, which can be used as drinkable water. Middle part and lower part of the river flow; pass through urban centers and industrial facilities, which means that this seriously risks river’s water quality

  3. FIELD OF RESEARCH AND METHODOLOGY In this work object of study was the level of the water pollution in water-collecting basin of the Lepenci River. In order to evaluate water quality in Lepenci river we have observed the change of some water quality indicators coming from potential source of pollution.

  4. INDICATORS OF WATER QUALITY • temperature, • pH value, • conductivity, • dissolved oxygen (DO), • biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), • chemical oxygen demand (COD), • nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, • total phosphorus and • heavy metals(lead, cadmium, copper and zinc)

  5. SAMPLING PLACES Sample-takings were selected in order to observe the influence of potential pollutants in this riverbed. As a sample-taking point was selected: - the spot where Nerodime River gets connected to Lepenci River flow • second point was right after Kaçaniku sewerage in vicinity of lime factory • third point in vicinity of cement factory in Elez Han • reference point for comparing results was taken mountainous part of the flow river

  6. RESULTS Being based on experimental results we have evaluated water quality vulnerability of the Lepenci River. The quality of the surface waters determines the possibility of its exploitation, if it is polluted, and obligations of those who pollute water to treat waters before they discharge them in natural recipients. The evaluation of the possibility to use the water for a variety of purposes, and the way of outpouring used waters is based on criteria and standards of the water quality. Specific indicators must clearly show and reflect changes affecting water quality in certain period of time.

  7. CONCLUSION Experimental results indicate: • Serious vulnerability of the Lepenci River • From a very clear water river is converted to a polluted ones. • High self-purification ability polluted surface is small. • If this trend of pollution continuous with a this intensity the situation can be worsen.

  8. RECOMMENDATION It a last moment to re-establish and set up monitoring net not only for the water quality of the Lepenci River but also for the other rivers in whole country. Investments should be done in new technologies for water treatment, and also an approval of the standards referring to pollutants. The objectives of these measurements are prevention, inspection and reduction of pollution of the Lepenci Riverbed, safety of the water quality, biologic equilibrium, and rehabilitation of the system.
