  5. Summary The story begins with George and Lennie by the Salinas River in rural California. They talk about their dreams of their own ranch and how their new jobs would effect their income. George warns Lennie not to screw up this time. They arrive the next day and meet all the workers including Curley, who is a mean, yet small young man who picks on Lennie. They return from their first day of work and sit through a quiet evening, Carl shoots Candy’s dog out of his request to put him out of his misery. After everyone leaves leaving George, Lennie, and Candy alone, Lennie asks about the rabbits again. George explains the ranch again, Candy overhears them talk about it and decides to join them to help achieve their goal. “S’pose I went with you guys. Tha’s three hundred an’ fifty bucks I’d put in. I ain’t much good, but I could cook and tend the chickens and hoe the garden some. How’d that be?” (Of Mice and Men Pg. 56)

  6. Summary Continued After about a week’s time, Lennie befriends the horse keeper, Crooks, while the others take Curley to the hospital after Lennie broke Curley’s hand. Crooks learns of Lennie’s dream and also joins them. Lennie goes to the barn next morning where he meets Curley’s wife, and accidentally breaks her neck. He is forced to run away to the secret spot where George told him to hide if he got in trouble, down by the river. The others tell George to go find and kill Lennie, since they assumed the know where he is. George meets Lennie at the secret spot. George starts to tell Lennie about the ranch again and then shoots him. “ George’s hands shook as he slowly raised the muzzle of the gun to Lennie’s turned head. He hesitated, closed his eyes, then a gun shot rolled up and down the hills. (Of Mice and Men pg. 88)
