  1. Geography Early Years & KS1 Introduction Welcome to your first session of geography. Please remember to sign the register, as your attendance will be monitored. It would be useful if you could sit in 6 groups. Many thanks. Before we start, you will be: • introduced to your tutor; • reminded of the course outline in your handbook; • reminded of WebLearn; • recommended to a range of useful books and websites on primary geography; Course Tutor: Ranjana McLean Room: BEUG-03

  2. Geography Early Years & KS1 Introduction Course Handbook is at: http://www.londonmet.ac.uk/weblearn/ • Please visit WebLearn regularly for announcements, discussions, course resources etc. • Under Geography you will find an outline for each session, recommended reading. • Power Points will be published after the session, so that you can print if you wish. • The Foundation Subjects Booklet 10/11 is also on Weblearn with the learning outcomes of the 4 geography sessions. So let’s have a look at them and go through them.

  3. Geography Early Years & KS1 Session 1 of 4: What is geography and how do pupils learn about it? Learning Outcomes: • to know and understand the content of theKey Stage (KS) 1 National Curriculum (NC)in Geography, as well as the relevant aspects of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework; • to understand what geography is and appreciate its importance in the primary curriculum; • to begin to understand how geography can be integrated into other areas of the NC, in particular literacy. Standards addressed: Q6,Q14,Q15 and Q22

  4. Activities • With a partner, write down 10 words that help to describe what geography is – think back to what you were taught at school, especially at primary • VIDEOS :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pbgai3dK16Qhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwbToV-FvsU&feature=related • Now spend 5 minutes with your partner, adding words to your list

  5. What is Geography? • Geography provokes and answers questions about the natural and human worlds, using different scales of enquiry to view them from different perspectives. • It develops knowledge of places and environments throughout the world, an understanding of maps, and a range of investigative and problem solving skills both inside and outside the classroom. • As such it prepares pupils for adult life and employment.

  6. What is Geography? • Geography is a focus within the curriculum for understanding and resolving issues about the environment and sustainable development. • It is also an important link between the natural and social sciences. As pupils study geography they encounter different societies and cultures. This helps them to realise how nations rely on each other. • It can inspire them to think about their own place in the world, their values, and their rights and responsibilities to other people and the environment.

  7. Perceptions of Geography Paper by Simon Catling (on Weblearn) Please check this out and look at page 3 Figure 2: Conceptions of geographyby primary postgraduate trainee teachers http://www.londonmet.ac.uk/weblearn/

  8. National Curriculum Geography Key Stage 1 The programmes of study for geography in the National Curriculum, comprise of 6 strands: • Geographical Enquiry & Skill • Knowledge and Understanding of Places • Knowledge and Understanding of Patterns and Processes • Knowledge and Understanding of Environmental Change and Sustainable Development • Breadth of Study

  9. Early Years Foundation Stage: Elements relevant to geographical study Knowledge and Understanding of the World: • Look closely at similarities, differences, patterns and changes • Ask questions about why things happen and how things work • Observe, find out about and identify features in the place they love and the natural world • Find out about their environment, and talk about those features they like and dislike • Begin to know about their own cultures and beliefs and those of other people • Find out about, and identify, some features of living things, objects and events they observe

  10. National Curriculum/EYFS Framework Task You will need to organise yourselves into 6 groups. Look at the EYFS and NC for KS1. As a group on sugar paper you must; • Draw a spidergram for each phase, and choose some statements and write down what you think is meant by the statement • Include ideas about the sort of activities children could be involved in within the area you have. Feedback to the rest of the group. Look at National Curriculum & EYFS Frameworks
