Malay: Definition • Malay: Article 16(2): professes Islam religion, speaks Malay language, conforms to Malay customs. • Islam: central to the Malay identity and culture solidarity. • How?

(3) VALUES OF BUDI BAHASA • Code of personal • Appropriateness of conduct, politeness, good manners • Very vital ingredients for harmonious living in a group-oriented society • Intellect or kindness
Budi concept • Governs the code of personal and social conduct • Reflect halus and good manner-akhlak mulia • Meaning? • Shows good breeding and dignified social control
(b) Intellect or kindness • Rasa concept: intuitive inner feelings over purely rational understanding • Dictates the ways of socializing, talking, eating, drinking at social functions • Behavior at interpersonal level with family members, teachers, neighbors
(4) RASA CONCEPT • Core personality and relates to personal character and social sensitivity as a member of a group • Encompassing one’s feelings (sensory and emotional level) and conscience
DISCUSSION -Rasa concept in a member of a group living in close proximity -Relate interdependently with neighbors on a day-to-day basis -People taught to sense the mood:- verbal/nonverbal gestures • Why? -To avoid conflict and maintain harmony How people communicate without words? -sympathy, orang berbudi kita berbahasa
Demonstrated through key senses -seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling -How to communicate without words? -simpathy, Orang berbudi kita berbahasa -get the sense of what is being said Why? • Communication is not so direct. • We have to tune into inner feelings • Use intuition • Unspoken is important as the spoken words

(5) SHAME MALU -has special meaning in then culture -No shame/Tak malu -Malu-high moral -Islam: Malu meaning?
(a) Shame malu at personal level -occur when see themselves as unfit to be considered as worthy members of a group -Feeling discomfort in the presence of people -Perceived human failings -Withdraw and reluctant to be seen in public (Japanese, Dr.Ellie,Kes pembunuhan Analtuya)
(b) Shame malu at social level -maintaining status and position in th eyes of others -Social judgment/social programming of a Malay Social criticism -Tak tahu malu -The result? Lost respect/revenge/sakit hati -Social programming of a Malay?
(6) AIR MUKA CONCEPT -Related to malu shame concept -Face relates the communication about respect and dignity How you deal with culture specific-malu? -Face is vital to enhance a person-to-person relationship Why? • Avoiding embarrassment • To build harmony
