This study investigates the bulk density (BD) and porosity of twelve different substrates utilized in growth cylinder experiments. Conducted by Lynn, Susu, and Machiel under the guidance of instructors Andronikos Mauromoustakos and Athanasios Gertsis, the analysis explores how these properties correlate. Findings indicate that as bulk density increases, porosity decreases, signifying a linear relationship. The study also highlights the influence of additives like vermiculite and zeolite on the substrate characteristics, contributing to optimal soil performance.

Analyzing the differences in the properties (Bulk Density and Porosity) of the 12 substrates used in the Growth cylinders experiment. Made by: Lynn, Susu and Machiel Instructors: Andronikos Mauromoustakos Athanasios Gertsis
Introduction • What did we analyze? • Why did we do this analyzes? • How did we get the bulk density and porosity data?

Is BD a function of porosity?! Yes, it is!

Conclusions BD is a function of theporosity. So this means that when the BD is high the porosity is low and when the porosity is high BD is low. When you plot this function you get a linear line.
Affects of vermiculite • Vermiculite improves the porosity in soils with “sandy base”. • Vermiculite improves the BD in soils with a “peat and perlite base”. • Vermiculite improves the porosity in soils with a “manure and sand base” • Vermiculite improves the porosity in soils with a “ clay loam base”
Affects of Zeolite • Zeolite improves the porosity in soils with “sandy base”. • Zeolite improves the BD in soils with a “peat and perlite base”. • Zeolite improves the porosity in soils with a “manure and sand base” • Zeolite improves the porosity in soils with a “ clay loam base”
Which group is the best? We think the substrates with the are the best, because this substrates doesn't have great significant difference. “Soil base’s”
