  2. GOAL SETTING AND REVIEW The process of setting goals helps you choose where you want to go in life. The same can be said for umpiring. Properly set they can be motivating, habit forming and confidence gaining.

  3. GOAL SETTING AND REVIEW Goals can be set with “the big picture” in mind or be broken down into smaller targets. But never have more than you can cope with. Once you have decided on your goals keep the process going by reviewing regularly.

  4. GOAL SETTING AND REVIEW Goal setting tip THOSE THAT AIM LOW USUALLY HIT THE TARGET!

  5. GOAL SETTING AND REVIEW An accepted method of making goals more powerful is to use the SMART concept. This is where the initials in SMART stand for certain words;

  6. GOAL SETTING AND REVIEW • S = SPECIFIC • M = MEASUREABLE • A = ATTAINABLE • R = RELEVANT • T = TIME-BOUND

  7. GOAL SETTING AND REVIEW SPECIFIC Rather than; “I will get fit this season” Set a goal that is very specific. In the example above it could be to lose a specific amount of weight or be able to run for a time without stopping.

  8. GOAL SETTING AND REVIEW MEASUREABLE Rather than; “I will go to the gym” Set a goal that you can measure “I will go to the gym at least 3 times per week for at least 1 hour per visit”

  9. GOAL SETTING AND REVIEW ATTAINABLE Do not set a goal that is not realistic. For example don’t say you will go to the gym 7 days per week if your work and family life make this impossible.

  10. GOAL SETTING AND REVIEW RELEVANT Don’t set a goal of losing 6kgs if you are only 50kgs wringing wet now! Make sure your goal is relevant to umpiring. Give some thought to your strengths and weaknesses and set goals to either maintain your strengths or improve on weaknesses.

  11. GOAL SETTING AND REVIEW TIME BOUND Set goals that you have the control over and can be achieved within a set time frame. Some goals may only be applicable for pre-season, others for 3 months, some for the entire season and some for the off season.

  12. GOAL SETTING AND REVIEWING Review your goals regularly. Take satisfaction in having met a goal. Consider renewing or replacing a completed goal. If you met the goal too easily, make your next goal harder. If you noticed a deficit in your skill set despite achieving the goal, set a new goal to fix this.

  13. GOAL SETTING AND REVIEW The most common “goals” set last season were along the lines of; • I will be better prepared for a match • I will review cricket law(s) • I will get fitter this season • I will improve my match day concentration and focus • I will demonstrate better Man Management • I will improve my teamwork • I will develop a pre-delivery routine

  14. TEAM TASK As you can see these plans do not meet the SMART test. Your task is to form (say) 5 groups with each group to select a different topic from the previous slide and turn that plan into something that is Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Relevant and Time bound (ie) “SMART”

  15. REVIEWING Review progress as often as is applicable. Some goals may need reviewing after each days play. Some may only need progressive reviews at different times. But most importantly Be honest …you are only fooling yourself if you are not.

  16. FORMS There is no right or wrong form to set and review your goals on. Select something that works for you. I have a 2 page form that Dave Quested uses in Canterbury which can be copied or adapted.

  17. THE FINAL WORDS IF NOT YOU, THEN WHO? IF NOT NOW, WHEN? IF YOUR MIND CAN CONCEIVE IT, AND YOUR HEART CAN BELIEVE IT, YOU CAN ACHIEVE IT LUCK IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PREPARATION MEETS OPPORTUNITY
