  2. ORGANIZATION • Every students’ binder is set up in the same order to promote organization. • Every student has an agenda where he/she is to write down their assignments every day. Every teacher has homework posted in their classroom. • Students are reminded every day while packing up to make sure they have everything they need to complete their homework.

  3. A SPECIAL TIME AND PLACE • Set aside a specific time and designated place for homework to be done. • Being consistent will help your child develop better study habits that will carry him/her through their remaining years in school. • Making homework a priority lets your child know that his/her education is a priority.

  4. ENGLISH/GRAMMAR “InfoPlease” and “Internet4classrooms” are websites with homework help sections that offer links to many great websites related to English, Grammar, and Spelling. These sites break down each skill and offer practice for your student either with a related, helpful link or practice sentences with answers.

  5. HELPFUL WEB SITES FOR ENGLISH • http://www.internet4classrooms.com/skills-5th-langbuilders.htm • http://www.infoplease.com/homework/ Our Grammar text book is a GREAT tool to utilize. If your child is struggling with identifying parts of speech or experiencing issues with grammar, the Grammar and Writing book has an easy to understand layout describing each component they are learning in class.

  6. READING WHAT’S READING GOT TO DO WITH It?

  7. By the end of 6th grade Student “A” will have read the equivalent of 60 whole school days. Student “B” will have read only 12 school days. Which student would you expect to have a better vocabulary? Which student would you expect to be more successful in school …….and in life? (Nagy & Herman 1987)

TIPS -Use household chores as opportunities for reinforcing math learning such as cooking (fractions) and repair activities. *We use sports, video games, grocery shopping, etc. in our examples! -Try to be aware of how your child is being taught math, and don’t teach strategies and shortcuts that conflict with the approach the teacher is using. Ask the teacher about online resources that you can use with your child at home. *See below

SCIENCE HELPFUL HINTS • Students need to focus on key vocabulary, taking the time to complete the study guides, and thorough reading comprehension during lessons. • Students may have the most difficulty interpreting graphs & charts with data. • Students should fully utilize their time in class in order to accomplish their assignment goals so they do not have to take it home for homework. • Students will be engaged in completing various types of graphic organizers to reinforce science skills & concepts.
