Abbasid Empire • Took over Umayyad Caliphate and set up in Baghdad in 750 CE • Extravagance were the rulers style, Women were veiled and slaves had more rights than free women • Poor rulers, fragmented territories, high taxes, and invaders weakened the empire • Crusades increased trade and were not a large concern for Abbasid rulers (Saladin took Holy land by 1193) • Literature, the arts, sciences, and medicine advanced

Sufis • Practiced the inner, mystical, or psycho-spiritual dimension of Islam • They believed they are the true pure form of Islam that was received by Gabriel to Mohammed • They were successful missionary traders throughout India and SE Asia • They were seen to have special powers and blended Islam with local religions well

Decline • Islam grew throughout Asia and was received by SE Asia (Philippines) by many and mixed Buddhism • Islam also grew in India and mixed with Hinduism • Also the Seljuk Turks moved for their own empire on the Anatolian peninsula (Ottoman Empire) • Invaders from the north (Mongols) finally broke down the fragmented empires and caused their final decline.
