  3. Things to Remember • Avoid using “you” in your essay. Example: “You might guess I’d decide to…” •  Don’t skip lines. Each line is valuable – you only get 26. •  Indent your paragraphs. STAAR takes writing conventions into consideration when scoring. •  Avoid slang or casual language. REMEMBER YOUR AUDIENCE. •  Personal narratives: remember to include a “lesson learned” in the conclusion—something that will tie your experience to a larger lesson. •  Always plan – even a rough outline will help you organize your thoughts, reduce repetition of thoughts and create a better overall flow.
