  6. The Travels of Marco Polo • In the 1200’s his father and uncle travel through Asia and meet the Khan in Bejing • They return to Italy, and Marco spends 24 years and 15,000 miles traveling throughout Asia • Marco’s book describes India, China and Japan, said to inspire Columbus and others

  7. Three cultures that have the technology for exploration • By the year 1400 • Asia • Arabs • Europe

  8. Asia • Most advanced technologically • Strong central government • Wealthy • Large population • In 1400’s Admiral Cheng Ho sails with 27,000 sailors, reaches Eastern Africa • Upon return the Emperor orders a halt to further explorations and orders the fleet destroyed

  9. Arabs • Possess good technology but there is no need to explore • Trade route from Asia to Europe passes through their lands, already profiting • No need to find new trade routes

  10. Europe • Will try to find their own route to China and Indiabypassing the Arabs

  11. The Known World at the Time of Columbus • Educated Europeans believed the world to be 6/7 land, with very small oceans

Columbus • Also believes the world is 6/7 land • Believes a short trip across the ocean will reach Asia • Has trouble finding a sponsor, Queen Isabella of Spain finally will • Three ships: Pinta, Nina, Santa Maria (flagship) • Keeps two log books during voyage, why? • San Salvador first landmass reached in America’s • One ship sinks • Believes he is in the East Indies, calls natives Indians • Will make three more trips, convinced he’s found Asia
