Element of the day • 76 – Osmium – Os • Osmium is the hardest metal element, and is at least as expensive as rhenium. • Osmium and iridium are alloyed in an incredibly hard and wear resistant material that was used in fountain pens and phonograph needles. • Osmium powder reacts with the air to produce a vapor called osmium tetroxide which is deadly. • Osmium is the densest element.
