Understanding Terminal Velocity: Gravity and Air Resistance

Learn about the two forces affecting terminal velocity - gravity and air resistance (friction) through experimental verification of gravity's acceleration. Discover the element of the day, Rhenium, its rarity, uses in fighter jet turbine blades, and more. Check out Lab 5C and prepare for tonight's homework on pages 25-26 with the Chapter 5 quiz set for Friday.

  1. Warm up 03-17-14 • Question: What two forces affect terminal velocity? • Answer: • gravity & air resistance (friction) • Goal: I will experimentally verify acceleration due to gravity.

  2. Element of the day • 75 – Rhenium – Re • Rhenium was the last stable element to be discovered, in 1925 in Germany. It is very rare and costs hundreds of dollars per ounce. • About ¾ of the world’s rhenium is used in fighter jet turbine blades.

  3. Warm up / new & good • Lab 5C • Tonight’s HW • Pgs25-26 • Ch 5 Quiz Friday Agenda / HW
