Gull Lake Community Schools What is College Application Week? • College Application Week (CAW) is both a national and statewide initiative with the goal to provide every 12th grade student the opportunity to apply to college. • CAW is an opportunity for ALL students to realize they can go to college and to begin thinking about what they plan to do after high school.

Gull Lake Community Schools Why is College Application Week Important? • At least 70% of all new jobs in Michigan will require a college education by 2020 • When comparing individuals with a four-year college degree and those with a high school diploma, the college graduates: • Earn an average of $22,000 more per year • Are in better health • Are about half as likely to be unemployed

Gull Lake Community Schools Understanding the word ‘College’ • Most workforce developers and education leaders use the word “college” to include any type of postsecondary education or training beyond high school. Options include: • Certificate or Licensing Programs • Associate Degrees • Bachelor’s Degrees

Gull Lake Community Schools Understanding the word ‘College’ • Certificate or Licensing Programs: These programs are specialized plans of study that are usually intended for students planning to pursue a trade. Most of these programs can be completed in a matter of months at community and technical colleges, through employers or trade groups (like EFE).

Gull Lake Community Schools Understanding the word ‘College’ • Associate Degrees: These degrees are typically awarded to students who complete a two-year period of study at community and technical colleges. • Bachelor’s Degrees: These degrees are typically awarded to students who complete a four-year period of study at a college or university.

Gull Lake Community Schools During CAW, students in grades 9-11 should be: • Thinking about your strengths and interests • Researching career options in your pathway • Looking at potential training options after high school • Finding out about Grade Point Average and ACT score requirements • Keeping grades up • Paying close attention to your ACT EXPLORE/ ACT PLAN test results • Visiting college campuses when possible • Talking with staff members, parents and other adults about how they chose a college and career

Gull Lake Community Schools During CAW, students in grade 12 should be: • Researching application requirements for colleges you are applying to • Working with teachers on any letters of recommendation needed • Preparing any required essays • Completing college applications • Sending transcripts to colleges via www.parchment.com • Researching scholarships via safe scholarship searches such as www.fastweb.com and locally through www.kalfound.org (available now) and www.glcsf.org (available mid-December)

Gull Lake Community Schools 12th Grade Seminar 10/16 Today’s Tasks: • Go to Guidance Department website or tinyurl.com/gulllakecaw • Complete CAW Senior Survey • Sign up for events you need help with during CAW • Look through the Senior Resource Guide for additional assistance • Research scholarships at colleges you are applying to and www.kalfound.org and www.fastweb.com Extra Time? • Check the status of applications you have already completed – are all requirements finished??? • ACT Scores • Transcript • Letter of Recommendation? • Research other colleges that you may apply to as well as their admissions requirements • Follow up with www.parchment.com as needed for transcripts • Email teachers if you are waiting on letters of recommendation so they are aware of your deadline
