  1. College Application Week Ohio Appalachian Center for Higher Education

  2. College Application Week Background • The original college application fair was held at Belmont Technical College and Jefferson Community College. The event was designed in 1995 to increase the number of students applying to college. • The new goal of the program is to provide all seniors at selected high schools the opportunity to apply to a college.

  3. What is college application week? • Due to barriers in having seniors attend a fair on site, the original program is being revamped. With the help of technology we are bringing the application fair to the local high school. • Our goal is to host a senior application day in each participating high school during late October and early November. This will be held in a room with computer access, where the senior will get assistance in applying to college via the Internet.

  4. What is college application week? • College admission representatives will be invited to attend the high school event. • Any school within the OACHE region will be piloted in fall of 2008. • The OACHE college application week sought advice from the successful North Carolina model. • Every student applies to at least one college. • The list of colleges will depend on the student’s request for schools and university. • Members of the OACHE college consortium will be present.

  5. How to begin… • Create a planning committee of admission officers, OACHE coordinators, high school guidance counselors and other college access programs personnel (Gear Up, Trio Upward Bound, OCAN, Tech Prep)

  6. School Participation • To participate, schools have to contact OACHE using the website to sign up to be a college application site school. • The school must make every effort to ensure that every senior will apply to at least one college. • The local school will provide a site coordinator who would participate in training and be responsible for the planning and implementing the local event • The OACHE staff will coordinate with the local OACHE access college coordinator.

  7. Site Coordinators • A hand book and training for site coordinators will be provided at the OACHE conference in October 2008 • The training will include: • A complete overview of the handbook • How to apply for fee waivers • How to complete the student surveys prior to the college application fair event • The application process including payment and/or essay submission

  8. Emphasis that the idea is this event is intended for ALL seniors Resources are available prior to the event Encourage students to do research, visit colleges and attend college fairs before the event Reach out to the community to have volunteers on hand Include entire school Make this an event not an assignment – something that your senior get to do, not something they have to do Training Key Points
