NCL Collection • New full-text NCL documents • online total CDs • 2008 12,346 27,227 49 • 2009 10,000 19,500 31 • In 2008 • NCL collection reached 441 CD-ROMs • 2 new subscriptions. INIS Database on the Internet • On 3rd April 2009 access to INIS database opened to all Internet users • Free, open and unrestricted access available from the INIS Homepage • http://www.iaea.org/inisnkm or directly from http://inisdb.iaea.org • This provided easy access to reliable nuclear information on the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology, including nonconventional literature, and made nuclear knowledge readily available worldwide 12th INIS/ETDE Joint Technical Committee Meeting
INIS Database on the CD-ROM • INIS Database on CD available on a monthly basis to subscribers • A set of 12 archival CDs for 1970–2008 and one current CD • In 2009 12 CDs were replaced with 2 DVDs • At the end of 2008 - 292 subscriptions (239 free and 53 paid) • Monthly updates are available on the FTP server 12th INIS/ETDE Joint Technical Committee Meeting
Partnerships • Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI), USA • Development and maintenance of a search Interface/Viewer for the Nuclear Science Abstracts (NSA) of the Energy Citations Database (ECD). The NSA Viewer allows the user to search records from the NSA Database without having to search through the full ECD • Over 829,000 items • 172,000 abstracts • Over 500 full-texts • A link to the Viewer is available through the INIS Database • In 2008 INIS digital preservation enabled public access to over 30,000 US NCL reports. Full collection available through the ETDE Database • OECD/NEA Databank • Co-operative arrangement with the OECD/NEA Data Bank • In 2008 many IAEA Member States that are not part of OECD benefited by receiving 931 packages, 123 codes and 7 new computer packages 12th INIS/ETDE Joint Technical Committee Meeting
Capacity Building through Technical Cooperation • 5 TC projects in Egypt, Uzbekistan, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Kenya continued • 8 new TC project requests for establishing/enhancing national INIS Centres were received (7 from Africa) • INIS was introduced as a component within the AFRA regional project “Human Resources Development and Nuclear Knowledge Management” 2009-2013 • In cooperation with the national INIS centre of Egypt, the INIS organized the “National INIS Seminar in Cairo” • Objective was to commemorate the completion of a TC project “Upgrading the National Information and Documentation Centre of the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority“, and to further disseminate information about the services available through the National Nuclear Information Centre of Egypt • 70 participants from 18 national institutions, universities and organizations attended • In 2008, 15 staff members from national INIS centres received on the job training in INIS operation • INIS Training Seminar will take place in November 2009 • Fellows from national INIS centres received training in some well-established INIS Centres, such as Belarus, Brazil, Romania and the Syrian Arab Republic • Expert assistance mission from the national INIS centre of Sweden 12th INIS/ETDE Joint Technical Committee Meeting
Marketing and Outreach • The INIS Secretariat undertook many promotional and outreach activities and produced supporting materials • INIS assisted 11 ILOs in their promotional activities by providing required materials • Promotional materials were provided to several in-house conferences and meetings, external meetings, and seminars • Four articles were prepared and published in the IAEA Bulletin and in international journals. One article about INIS was published in the Nuclear News Journal • The INIS Joint Marketing Plan was developed and presented at the 34th ILO Consultative Meeting • During the 52nd and 53rd IAEA General Conference the INIS & NKM Section was present 12th INIS/ETDE Joint Technical Committee Meeting
Topical Sets of INIS Information Resources • Several subject-oriented/topical CDs containing INIS records and NCL full texts prepared • Distribution made to participants at in-house meetings and conferences • CDs also provided to the ILOs upon their request 12th INIS/ETDE Joint Technical Committee Meeting
Computer-Assisted Indexing System (CAI) • In 2008, Bulgaria, China, Germany, ETDE, Finland, Japan, Malaysia and Vietnam used the CAI batch processing mode to process 13,424 records • Since 2005, the number of records processed by CAI batch has increased to 37,004 • At the request of the INIS Liaison Officers, a remote access feature to CAI was set up and implemented in June 2007 and is available at the CAI website (https://cai.iaea.org) • External access to CAI provides secure connection and encryption • This was tested during 2007 and 2008 by Argentina, Brazil, China, the Czech Republic, ETDE, France, Germany, India, Japan, Switzerland, Uruguay and Uzbekistan • Since May 2008, remote access to CAI is being provided to all Member States as a regular service of the INIS 12th INIS/ETDE Joint Technical Committee Meeting
Metadata Extraction Tool (MET) • MET is a new tool developed and tested by INIS • The objective is to automate INIS record creation using PDF files • Tool allows • capture of text from original PDF • reformatting of content according to INIS input rules • verification against INIS Authorities • production of bibliographic files in TTF and their export to INIS production system • Tool allowed significant handling improvements and the facilitation of data capture • A basic set of validation rules has been implemented and the final check is done by FIBRE and the production system 12th INIS/ETDE Joint Technical Committee Meeting
Multilingual Thesaurus During 2007 and 2008 all participating Member States (China, France, Germany, the Russian Federation, Spain and the Syrian Arab Republic) have translated the additions and changes to the vocabulary of controlled terminology and delivered translation lists to INIS, which have been uploaded to the Multilingual Thesaurus. In May 2008 new revisions of the Multilingual Thesaurus have been produced for: - monolingual versions of the thesaurus including the full thesaurus hierarchy - multilingual dictionaries without thesaurus hierarchy - interactive Multilingual Thesaurus with navigation capabilities including the full thesaurus hierarchy. 12th INIS/ETDE Joint Technical Committee Meeting
Digital Preservation • The most significant project of the past four years has been conversion of the INIS collection of ‘grey’, non-conventional literature (NCL) from microfiche to digital media • About 60 percent of this microfiche collection has been digitized. To be finished in 2 years • Searchable full-text documents in PDF were uploaded to the INIS online database, respecting the public access authorization of INIS Members. • In 2008 NCL collections of 29 States have been converted from microfiche to digital medium • Digitized country sets are available online from the INIS Database and were provided as a separate set to Member States • 30,000 of US NCL reports have been digitized by INIS, reviewed by OSTI, and given authorization for open access to the full text • Other projects • Back volumes of the English and French versions of the ‘IAEA Bulletin’ • IAEA General Conference documents dating back to 1957 • Documents of the Board of Governors of the past 50 years • IUREP publications available at the IAEA on World Uranium Resources • 11 volumes of the series ‘Directory of Nuclear Reactors’ • In October 2008 a document providing information about the digital preservation processes carried out by the INIS has been published 12th INIS/ETDE Joint Technical Committee Meeting
Meetings • The 34th Consultative Meeting of INIS Liaison Officers was conducted from 3 to 5 November 2008 in Vienna • An Introductory Session for the newcomers was organized a day before the meeting • INIS Status Report on Actions and Recommendations is available as IP-JTC-2009-02 12th INIS/ETDE Joint Technical Committee Meeting
