    4. Program Administration: Educating All schools are encouraged to offer complimentary nutrition education. Cannot charge for nutrition education. Use free resources, such as: Discover free materials. http://www.fruitsandveggiesmorematters.org/ http://www.eatsmart.org/ http://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/FFVP/locally-developed.htm California Harvest of the Month http://www.harvestofthemonth.com/tool-kit.asp SY 2011-12 OSPI FFVP Annual Training As regulations do not allow schools to charge the FFVP for nutrition education or promotional materials, they need to discover other methods to fund the cost of NE materials, or use no-cost materials provided by community partners. I have provided a few web addresses to get you started; they are well developed sites complete with free nutrition education ideas and materials. The last site is the USDA FFVP website where states can spotlight and share nutrition education that schools have developed their own. I clicked on California, which spotlights their Harvest of the Month toolkit. If you develop something that you would like to share, please let me know. 5. Program Administration: Educating Develop nutrition education (NE) that fit the needs of your students. Include NE whenever possible, even on days the program is not offered. Consult with FFVP partners to obtain no-cost promotional items. Make teachers and administrators aware of resources like: www.TeamNutrition.usda.gov www.ChooseMyPlate.gov www.fns.usda.gov/cnd SY 2011-12 OSPI FFVP Annual Training Educate students on the produce they will be receiving. The more they are exposed to the item, the more likely they will try it. Incorporate nutrition education into all aspects of the classroom. For example, the tangerine FFVP snack could become a lesson on shapes, colors, fractions, and geography, by asking students to identify the shape of the whole and sectioned fruit, describe the color of the rind, pith, edible fruit, and seeds, illustrate the sections as fractions of the whole fruit, and learn where the fruit is cultivated. You could also send something home to extend the education to the students family. Educate students on the produce they will be receiving. Offer a puzzle to introduce words and concepts. http://www.discoveryeducation.com/free-puzzlemaker/?CFID=13709593&CFTOKEN=86528822 OSPI FFVP Website Resources address: http://www.k12.wa.us/ChildNutrition/programs/FFVP/Resources.aspx SY 2011-12 OSPI FFVP Annual Training Simple things can provide quick but informative nutrition education. Many states have a website that offers ideas and actual education tidbits for you to use. I have borrowed a resource from Florida that has already provided information for you to use called the Produce Facts Booklet. It has 37 different produce items with information for each from apples to zucchini. You would copy, cut, and then place a produce fact sheet into the produce basket for the teacher or student to read to the class. It can be located, along with a variety of other education ideas, at the FFVP website. You can also offer puzzles to introduce new spelling words or key concepts. There are a variety of websites that offer free services to make word searches, crossword puzzles, hidden messages, etc. I have provided a word search with a hidden message for you to experience in your training packet. 10. Program Administration: Promoting Community Promotion Reader Boards Website Menus Newsletters Back-to-School night SY 2011-12 OSPI FFVP Annual Training On the first few days of school, announce the program on the schools reader board. Prominently display an announcement of the program on the schools or nutrition services website; make sure to explain how the program works and who receives the produce. Provide a FFVP menu for parents to review and perhaps to discuss their students. A few schools in the past have had their schools FFVP on the evening news, complete with student interviews. 11. Program Administration: Promoting School Promotion Back-to-School night display. Create interest with unusual produce items. Allow sampling, if funded by non-FFVP sources. PA System. Showcase new produce in the cafeteria. SY 2011-12 OSPI FFVP Annual Training Displays provide a wonderful opportunity to showcase some of the unusual produce items that will be introduced to students during the school year. Dont settle for the usual items, create interest by displaying items like cherimoyas, persimmons, champagne grapes, eggplant, and tomatillos. While schools may not use FFVP funds for displays, many vendors are happy to provide a sampling of produce for back to school nights. If there is enough to go around, offer samples so that parents and students get a taste of whats to come. Other ways to promote the program are to use the PA system to announce the FFVP snack and to showcase an unusual or new produce item in the cafeteria the month or week it will be offered to create interest and discussion. Not only will students become excited, the staff and community will too!
