The $23 Billion Lamu Port Project • Arguably the country’s largest investment so far • Expected to be the largest modern free port on the Eastern Coast of Africa • The port, will be able to handle Super Post Panamax vessels, with a capacity of 8,000 teu as opposed to the 3,000 teu other vessels it is currently handling • To serve as a convenient axis that links China/India with the rich interland countries of Africa • Involves a new transport corridor that will open up a route to the landlocked countries of Ethiopia and the newly independent, South Sudan • In addition to raising the scope for this region’s tourism, agriculture and industrial potential, the project will open up access to Oil rich Southern Sudan • The new modern free port will be Africa’s response to Dubai Arabian Hotel Investment Conference, 5th – 6th May 2013 – MadinatJumeirah, Dubai
