  1. English Grammar Pedagogical Analysis Hyunju Kim

  2. Introduction • Teaching grammar is an important part of language teaching. • Grammar is necessary to learn a language. • My experiences learning English grammar. • The question is…………………….

  3. What is the best method for teaching English grammar? Teaching grammar alone vs. Teaching grammar through situational role play

  4. Side one • Teaching English grammar alone • Benefits: can cover more complex rules Can save time, Teaching feels more efficient • Problems: no practical applications, No ability to apply rules to a larger context

  5. Side two • Teaching grammar through situational role play • Benefits: more practical use of the rules, More effective participation, Entertaining • Problems: more time demanding and less class time for other work, Less time to cover other rules

  6. Is the sacrifice of the time worth the practical application of the rules?

  7. Methodology • Make survey • Have 19 ELC students take the survey • Average the result • The highest average score is the better teaching method

  8. Survey • How did you learn grammar when you studied English? 1)Grammar alone, for example, from textbooks and lectures 2)Through activities, for example, situational role play and games

  9. Survey (cont’d) 8. If I am older, I wouldtryto get a job in A B C D Florida. 9. I wonderhow muchshould Itip the driver for a A B C D trip to the airport 10. My doctor told metowearing a hat whenever A B C I go into the sun. D

  10. Results of the Survey

  11. Potential Problems • The difference of the average was small • Very different sample sizes • 5(with role plays) vs. 14(grammar alone) • Only people taught grammar alone got perfect scores

  12. Conclusion • The students who did the situational role plays scored higher than those who didn’t, showing that role plays are worth the extra class time. • The best method of teaching grammar is through activities such as situational role plays.

  13. Future Work • Have more students take the survey • Ask more different grammar rule questions in the survey • If I had more time to do the survey, I would take the survey to the ELC classrooms
