Siliconsamples Silicon samples 10 x 10 mm with wafers 525 µm thick Silicon Shear tests with four different adhesive types: Liquid glue Araldite 2020 Adhesive tape NITTO DENKO 30 µm thick Adhesive tape 3M 9461P – 30 µm thick Adhesive film FastelFilm 30 µm thick Silicon glue • Polyester film double coated by acrylic adhesive • Polyester = 0.13-0.15 W/m K • Acrilyc = 0.2 W/m K • 3M Adhesive 100 (Acrylic adhesive) • 3M Adhesive 100 = 0.178 W/m K • EVA (Ethylene - vinyl Acetate) adhesive film • EVA = 0.34 W/m K • Two components epoxy liquid glue • Epoxy = 0.188 W/m K • Surface cleaning with acetone • 1 Kg for 3 minutes • 80 °C in the oven (weight and plate already hot) • Surface cleaning with acetone • Vacuum outgassing after mixing the component • Dispensing with a slice • Surface cleaning with acetone • 1 Kg for 65 hours • Surface cleaning with acetone • 1 Kg for 65 hours

  3. Irradiation • Irradiation levels: • No irradiation • 3 x 10 13 • 1 x 10 14  nominal • 1 x 10 15 Araldite: 25 samples FastelFilm: 25 samples NittoDenko: 25 samples 3M: 25 samples Green = glued in Genova the 05-04-12 Red= gluedat CERN the 22-05-12

  5. Test procedure Working set up Stainless steel tool to performe the shear force on the samples The tool has been inserted between the two plates of the machine

  6. Results – general outlook

  7. NittoDenko – No irradiation • First test (N001) ? Set up problems  negletted • Spare and no irradiation should have the same behavior!! F force (N)= σ * 100 D displacement(mm)= ε * 10

  8. NittoDenko - 3 10 13 - 1 10 14- 1 10 15 For the first two radiations the adhesivebecomes more rigid and stiff! In last case the adhesiveisdead! F force (N)= σ * 100 D displacement(mm)= ε * 10

  9. NittoDenko – Comparison Max value = 4.1 Mpa • Spare and no irradiation should have the same behavior!! • The spread of the results is very small

  10. 3M – No irradiation More or lesssamebehavior!! F force (N)= σ * 100 D displacement(mm)= ε * 10

  11. 3M - 3 10 13 - 1 10 14- 1 10 15 For the first radiation the adhesivebecomes more rigid and stiff! Thenitstarts to becomesofter in the last case the adhesivebehaveslike the non-irradiated one! F force (N)= σ * 100 D displacement(mm)= ε * 10

  12. 3M – Comparison Max value = 4.5 Mpa • First twoequals! • Last case the adhesiveislike the non-irradiatedone!

  13. Fastelfilm – No irradiation • Non repeatable! • Differentbehavior in thistwo cases (????) F force (N)= σ * 100 D displacement(mm)= ε * 10

  14. FastelFilm - 3 10 13 - 1 10 14 First case is more rigidthenitstarts to meltunderhigher radiation!!! F force (N)= σ * 100 D displacement(mm)= ε * 10

  15. FastelFilm – 1 10 15 Toolbroken: piece of silicongotstuckinside!  re-machined the groove F force (N)= σ * 100 D displacement(mm)= ε * 10

  16. FastelFilm – Comparison Max value = 3.6 Mpa The adhesiveisthermoplastic, at high radiation itmelts! (what’s the temperatureinside the vesselduring the irradiation???)

  17. Araldite – No irradiation New scale for the graphs! Values higherthan for the otheradhesives!!! F force (N)= σ * 100 Alwaystested the silicon!!!! D displacement(mm)= ε * 10

  18. Araldite - 3 10 13 - 1 10 14- 1 10 15 The glue seemsburned!! F force (N)= σ * 100 D displacement(mm)= ε * 10

  19. Araldite – Comparison Max value = 26 Mpa The values are higherthanbefore! Wecannotsayanything about the glue! (itis more resistantthansilicon!!!!)
