  1. Atom—All matter is made of atoms. Smallest part of matter (NOT LIVING)

  2. Element • Pure Substances that Can not be broken down by physical or chemical means • Composed of only 1 type of atom • Found on the periodic table • Has a symbol with one capital letter (If more than 1 letter second letter is lower case) • Example: Gold --Au, Carbon --C

  3. Compounds • Matter that is composed of 2 or more elements CHEMICALLY COMBINED • Have a formula that has 2 or more capital letters • PURE SUBSTANCE—All the molecules are alike in a compound • Elements are have a specific ratio in compounds • Example: Calcium Chloride CaCl, Water H2O

  4. Mixture • Not pure substance • Matter put together with physical changes • Easily separated • No set ratio • 2 types of mixtures

  5. 2 types of mixtures • Homogeneous mixture—looks the same throughout (salt water) • Heterogenous mixture—you can see the different parts of the mixture • (fruit loops)
