The Jazz Age • Booming economy and prosperity allowed many Americans to have a restless, carefree spirit. Jazz= new music!
Time of Turmoil • Bolsheviks- Communists who took control of Russia. Tried to overthrow capitalism (economic system based on private property & free enterprise). • Americans were afraid of Communists or anarchists (people who believed in no govt.) overthrowing our govt. • Red Scare- our govt. went after “Reds” (communists) and other radicals
A. Mitchell Palmer- ordered the arrest of Communists and radicals • Deported- some were thrown out of the U.S. • Sacco & Vanzetti- • Arrested and tried for murder; death sentence • Proclaimed innocence • Could be anti-foreign feelings that led to guilty verdict
Labor Unrest • Workers demand higher wages and strike • Boston Police Strike collapses • Union membership declines • A. Phillip Randolph- African American who starts the brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters- Railroad Union
