  4. What are icons? Ans: The graphical symbol on the desktop are called Icons. An Icon may represent a program, a disc drive, a folder or a file.

  5. What is a status bar? Ans: The horizontal bar below the work area is called the status bar. It gives information about what the program is currently doing or about a selected item in the window.

  6. What is the window desktop? Ans: After booting, loading of the operating system and logging in, the first thing that you see on the monitor is the Desktop. When you work in windows, your main workspace is the Desktop. Desktop is the control centre of the windows.

  7. Describe the operating system. Ans: The computer performs the arithmetic functions like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division accurately. The program which helps the computer to perform these is a set of instructions an operating system. An operating system is a set of instructions which controls the data, data storage and information.

  8. )What is CUI? Ans: It uses text or commands, typed through the keyboard to help the user communicate with the computer. In CUI, we have to remember the commands and the grammar of these commands thoroughly. Example - Disk Operating System (DOS).

  9. What is GUI? Ans: : It uses graphical objects to help the user interact with the computer. In the windows operating system, commands are given by clicking on small pictures, symbols or words. They are called graphics. In GUI there is no need to remember the commands. Example – Windows, Linux etc.

  10. Explain booting. Ans: Booting is the process of checking input and output devices and load the operating system.

  11. Which are the two types of booting? Explain. • Ans: There are two types of booting (1) Cold booting (2) Warm booting. (1)Cold booting : A cold boot is the start of computer from the beginning, it is also called hard boot. (2)Warm booting : Warm booting is resetting the computer, where operating system is already on, by pressing ctrl+alt+del keys. It is also called soft boot or reboot.

  12. Explain the use of maximize and restore buttons. • Ans: When a program window occupies the entire screen on the Desktop, the window is said to be maximized. When a window is maximized, the middle button is restore button. Clicking on this button, makes the window smaller in size . One small, the middle button changes to maximize, indicating if you click on this button now, the window will be maximized.
