  3. Why doesn’t he go? • “Because it’s the thought of Mecca that keeps me alive[…] I’m afraid that if my dream is realized, I’ll have no reason to go on living” (55).

  9. The secret to discovery • The Alchemist says that some people discover alchemy through intensive study, and some find it by accident. • “then there were others, who were interested only in gold. They never found the secret” (137).
