  2. What Type of Modem Can You Use for a DSL? There are several choices of modems depending on your computer. • An external USB-connected modem that does not require a NIC card or one that does. • An internal modem that does not require a NIC card. • Many experts believe that external modems are superior to internal modems because they contain lights and indicate how the modem is working.

  3. What Type of Modem Is Needed for A Cable Based Internet Connection? • If you have a modem that is already being used for Internet Connection, to Send and/or Receive Faxes or Voicemail Your Modem Will Require These • CMTS Equipment • Network Equipment • An Upgraded Cable Infrastructure.

  4. How Much Do They Cost? • DSL-$49.95 Per Month • Cable Based Internet Connection-$19.95 Per Month

  5. SPEED • DSL starts at 768Kbps and extends to 1.5Mbps. • Cable modem at speeds approaching 2 Mbps (Megabits-per-second); however, one or more factors will tend to limit your download speed to between 200 and 800 kbps (kilobits-per-second).

  6. ADVANTAGES • DSL- No Busy Signals, No Need For A Second Phone Line, Can Fit Multiple Computers Onto A Single DSL. • Cable Access-Faster Connection

  7. DISADVANTAGES • DSL-COST MORE MONEY • CABLE ACCESS-Certain Factors can slow the modem speeds down to as much as 200Mbps.

General Differences: • DSL= Sends Data at a very high speed through telephone wires, at a slower speed than cable, however is more affordable and there is not need for a second phone line. • Cable Access=A Communication link that uses coaxial television cables, at a faster speed than DSL but is more expensive but downloads games and programs quicker and easier.
