  2. S.T.U.B.—Launching Pad or Parking Lot “In a world in which nine out of every ten people are lost, three out of four have never heard the way out, and one of every two cannot hear, the church sleeps on. Could it be we think there must be some other way? Or perhaps we don’t really care that much.”—“The Great Omission” by Robertson McQuilken, 2002

  3. S.T.U.B.—Launching Pad or Parking Lot Paul cared—Acts 15:32-41 (pew Bible p851) • 1st Journey • Paul and Barnabas had travelled to Cyprus, Pamphylia, Pisidia, Lycaonia, Salamis, Paphos, Perga, Iconiam, Lystra, Derbe, Antioch in Pisidia, and elsewhere • They wished to go again • Why? • “to see how the new believers are doing.”—v36

  4. S.T.U.B.—Launching Pad or Parking Lot They had parked at Antioch long enough • It was time to be launched again • 1st launching • “Dedicate Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have called them.”  So after more fasting and prayer, the men laid their hands on them and sent them on their way.—13:2-3 • Their “special work” was to evangelize

  5. S.T.U.B.—Launching Pad or Parking Lot They had parked at Antioch long enough • It was time to be launched again • 2nd launching • “to see how the new believers are doing.”—v36 • Discipleship—twofold • Encouraging and strengthening their faith—v32 • Taught and preached the word of the Lord—v35 • Discipleship should: • Encourage and strengthen believers in their faith • So they can be launched out to make disciples

  6. S.T.U.B.—Launching Pad or Parking Lot Some Thoughts on Parking Lots • We come to: • Shop—like malls etc • There to get what we need • Visit—like hospitals • There to visit the ones we like • Eat—like restaurants • There to fill up on what we like and leave • Commute—like airports, terminals, etc • There to get a lift—we don’t want to know anyone • Party—like tailgate parties • If we stay at the party we miss the game

  7. S.T.U.B.—Launching Pad or Parking Lot Some Thoughts on Launching Pads • We come to: • See the lift off • Curiosity or excitement, it attracts people to the cause • Encourage those being launched • Friends or loved ones need to know we are there • Support the launching • Know the purpose and are supportive of it • Cheer with the others • Excitement is generated with new endeavours • Wait in anticipation for the results • Pray for those gone, for results, protection, God’s will

  8. S.T.U.B.—Launching Pad or Parking Lot And there was great joy throughout the church that day…—Acts 15:31 • They were preparing for another launch • Dissention over Mark • Lessons to learn • It was real • They agreed to disagree but still launch • 2 teams instead of 1 • God will prevail in His people

  9. S.T.U.B.—Launching Pad or Parking Lot • Dissention over Mark • What was it over? • What can they do for God’s work?—Paul • How can God use the weak? • But can he cut it in ministry? • What can God’s work do for them?—Barnabas • What will happen to Mark if we reject him now? • Aren’t we called to mentor the weak as well? Don’t we still ask those questions? Are either wrong thinking?

  10. S.T.U.B.—Launching Pad or Parking Lot On With the Launch • Barnabas chose Mark • He worked out fine • Colossians 4:10; 2 Timothy 4:11; Philemon 23-24 • Mark became useful to Paul and to God’s work • Paul chose Silas • Acts 15:22,32; Acts 16:37; 1 Peter 5:12 • A prophet, Roman citizen, secretary for Peter’s first letter

  11. S.T.U.B.—Launching Pad or Parking Lot On With the Launch • Some things that make me go hmmm • The UB have been in Canada 150 years and have 11 churches and 1 plant—hmmm • STUB has been here at least since 1914 and are struggling to stay afloat—hmmm • The fastest growing churches in the UB are in Central America where they have little money but are planting new churches at incredible speed—hmmm

  12. S.T.U.B.—Launching Pad or Parking Lot • Are we a launching pad or a parking lot? • Are you a launching pad or a parking lot? • I am launching out to evangelize? □ Yes□ Sometimes□ Never • I am launching out in discipleship—to build up and encourage the church so that we will launch? □ Yes □ Sometimes□ Never
