  10. DYPB Upgrading (1/5) 3 DYPB : commonly named “Yellow racks” Local Protection of the LHC Dipole Magnets

  11. DYPB Upgrading (2/5) 3 • Exchange of 1232 Local Protection Units for Dipole Magnets to integrate the enhanced quench heater supervision and adapt to redundant UPS powering. DQLPU Type ‘A’ (rear view) • Current • version (front view) With support of EM section, 1250 units will be produced With support of EM section, 1300 motherboards will be produced, together with 1300 DQHSU & 1300 DQCSU cards

  12. DYPB Upgrading (3/5) 3 • Improvement and Extension Plan for the 4928 Quench Heater P.S. Introduction of a discharge current measurement for each Quench Heater Power Supply through insertion of a new Transducer module (DQLIM) [in replacement of the "Crawford box” ] 1300 DQLIM units will be assembled at Cern. Way side • QRL side x2 • New redundant power supply (DQLPUR) Required for new DQLPU crate 2600 DQPUR units will be produced Courtesy: Joaquim

  14. External Collaborators for DYPB activities  Contract not signed yet WP1 : Disconnection and removal in the LHC tunnel of chassis and patches from the magnet local protection DYPB racks. Disconnection and securing of the instrumentation cables in the tunnel. Installation of the redundant PS in DYPQ racks. Protection and securing of DYPQ racks prior to splice consolidation WP2 : Dismounting and recuperation of components from removed chassis and patches WP3: Assembly and testing of the local protection crates DQLPU WP4: Assembly, preparation and testing of the modified DYPB racks WP5: Preparation and connection of the DYPB racks in the LHC tunnel.; Reconnection of the instrumentation cables in the tunnel.

  15. Other activities related to Quench Detection 4 • Reconfiguration of the existing Field-Bus to overcome present limitations in data transmission capacity. Involves re-wiring, doubling (from 2 to 4 per sector) of the tunnel Gateways, doubling of the number of repeaters and some infrastructural changes. • BE/CO for supplying more WorldFIP gateways and for supervising the installation work • EN/EL for new cables and fibers • EN/ICE for more PVSS servers

Other activities related to Quench Detection 4 • Extension of the Distributed Busbar Splice Monitoring System Workload will depend of CSCM type test results • EN/EL for re-routing the cables around Q10, Q9 and Q8 (required to increase electro-magnetic immunity of protection systems) • Extension/Completion of the "Voltage-to-Ground" measurement system • Maintenance of the protection of the 600A circuits. 114 crates have to be pull-out and re-installed afterwards. Same activity for the Quench Loop Controllers (16 units) (with support of EM section) DQQBS board With support of EM section, 1100 cards will be produced (240 already done) DQQDE board DQGPU crate type ‘A’

External Collaborators for QPS activities - Consolidation and upgrade of DQLPU and DQHDS for main dipoles and quads, etc... - Consolidation and extension of the nQPS by complete implementation of the voltage-to-ground system, etc... - Upgrade of corrector magnet circuits (RQTF/RQTD) including new instrumentation cabling, etc... - Consolidation of QDS controls following Field bus changes - Relocation & System testing of circuit protection equipment within the programme R2E - Participation in the campaigns of IST and HWC.

Activities related to Energy Extraction facilities (1/2) 5 • Consolidation of 606 Extraction Breakers for 600A circuits • improved fixation of the "Holding" coil • Mitigation Package • Development and deployment of 202 DAQ systems type DQAMS600 • Installation of Snubber Capacitor Banks in RQF/RQD circuits • EN/HE for transport (from SR2 to 1st floor of UAs in points #2,4,6 & 8)

  19. Activities related to Energy Extraction facilities(2/2) 5 • Replacement of the Arc Chutes on Quadrupoles • EN/HE for transport • DQRB Dump Resistors • EN/HE • EN/CV • Upgrade and ELQA of cabling for IPQs and IPDs (to improve EMC immunity) • EN/EL for re-cabling for Q8, Q9, & Q10 only

Activity related to Powering Interlock System 6 • Additional interface with the LHC Access system • Modification/extension of existing access interlock (Vs Powering) • Additional PIC with a new PLC installed in the CCR [ to collect HW signals from the LHC Access System (LASS) ] • SW part : integrate new interlock signals into existing PIC-PVSS supervision • EN/ICE: contribution for the PLC program and for the PVSS SCADA • GS/ASE: for providing the safety relays with the status of the access conditions LASS new PIC

Activities related to Beam Interlock systems 6 & Safe MachineParameters systems • Change of the CPU module of all VME systems currently in operation (LynxOS replaced by Linux) • BE/CO for supplying the module and for giving support in case of non-compatibility with existing HW CPU module Beam Interlock Controller in total, ~50 front-ends have to be upgraded (LHC, SPS Transfer Lines and SPS ring) SMP Controller

  24. PCB of CIBF Activities related to Beam Interlock Syst. (2/3) 6 Replace the CIBF units by an upgraded version • Internal resources are used.; no needs from other groups. Pair of CIBF units CIBF are used to Interlock Extraction lines CIBF also used also to Interlock LHC injection (Permits from Experiments and LBDS) • Install remote monitoring for the Beam Permit Loops • Internal resources are used.; no needs from other groups. (3/3) 6 • Connect BIS to LHC Beam Dump System re-triggering unit in order to provide fail–safe ultimate asynchronous dump protection • In close collaboration with TE/ABT Delayed Asynchronous Dump Request • Asynchronous Dump Request from BIS into the LBDS via the re-triggering lines • ADR should be delayed by 250μs after detection of the BIS loop opening Fault tolerant Fail-safe Courtesy A.   26. 6 Activities related to R2E (1/2) • BIS: Move Beam Interlock Controller from UJ56 to USC55 • EN/EL for fiber optics links • FMCM : Relocation of the unit from UJ56 to USC55 • EN/EL for cabling. • PIC: Relocation of the Controllers in IR1 and IR5. • EN/EL for cabling • TE/EPC for re-commissioning => will be included in HWC • PIC, WIC & BIC in TZ76: Remove (temporary) the Controllers during the civil works period FMCM unit Powering Interlock Controller PIC

Activities related to R2E (2/2) • QDS: • Changes to Firmware for overcoming consequences of SEU events • Partial upgrade of the digital detection boards (for the radiation exposed areas of the 4 RRs in P1 and P5) • Relocation of the Quench Protection Equipment Only 3 locations considered: UJ14, UJ16 and UJ56. • ELQA: Relocation of the « Current leads Heaters » racks in Pt1 and 5. • EN/EL for cabling. 4 Powering Interlock Controller nDQDL card nDQDI card 1

Activities related to LIU project (2/2) 7 • WIC deployment in Booster (~200 magnets) and in Linac4 (82 magnets including T.L.) • EN/ICE for PLC program and PVSS application • EN/EL for cabling • TE/EPC & TE/MSC: minor contribution for commissioning phase • Install new magnet interconnection boxes in Ti2/Ti8 (~800 in total) • EN/ICE for PLC program and PVSS application • TE/EPC: minor contribution for re-commissioning • Modification of the sectorization for the Magnet Interlock system for the SPS • EN/EL for cabling • TE/EPC & TE/MSC: minor contribution for commissioning phase

Other activities related to neither LHC nor LIU 7 • Quench Detection system and Energy Extraction for HIE-ISOLDE • WIC deployment in HIE-ISOLDE (73 magnets) • EN/ICE for PLC program and PVSS application • EN/EL for cabling • TE/EPC & TE/MSC: minor contribution for commissioning phase • Magnet Protection for the Magnet Test Benches (for previous Bloc 4 now located in SM18 + FRESCA + Building 180 ) It will involve Quench Detection system, Energy Extraction & Interlocks. • EN/ICE for PLC program and PVSS application • TE/MSC: minor contribution for commissioning phase Cryomodule Layout of HIE-Isolde facility • QPS for FAIR: asked by MSC (c.f. plan item#10944)

Summing up • Numerous activities in front of us: critical, diverse, various locations (LHC, Injectors, Magnet test benches...) • All internal resources will be deployed • Many external collaborators will join us (with a peak = ~54 people) • We relies on support of other groups like: EN/EL, EN/HE, EN/ICE, BE/CO, etc... • MPE is also involved in activities created by other groups
