  1. Computed Tomography

  2. You may know Computed Tomography better as “CT or CAT Scans” • Computed Tomography is used to generate or make a 3D image from a series of 2D x-rays taken at a 360 degree axis. • You get a much better and detailed image of what you are trying to look at with a CT machine than you do with a regular x-ray machine.

  3. CT SCAN OF THE LUNGS NORMAL XRAY OF THE LUNGS

  4. CT uses x-ray and computer technology to make images of certain planes without the normal obstruction of fat, ribs, spine, pelvis or any other organs that may mask the real detail of what you’re trying to looking at • The CT unit consists of a movable bed or cradle, which is where the patient lies. It also contains something called the gantry, which contains the x-ray tube, detectors, and collimators • The gantry moves at 360 degrees and sends a series of x-rays to the computer, where it gets pieced into a single 3d image

  5. Reasons for A ct Usually, you would do a CT scan for central nervous system views, but you can also use a CT scan to search the thorax or the abdomen for masses or other forms of cancer. It is found to be most beneficial for skull or cranial views.

  6. Although CT scans are more detailed and are much more helpful in diagnosing in Veterinary Medicine, it is also extremely costly and therefore not used very often.

  7. CT scans are extremely beneficial if you get a chance to work in a clinic that has one or to work with a referral clinic with one. If you clients are willing to spend the money, it can be very helpful in diagnosing and getting a good look at what’s going on in your clients internally.

  8. Questions • What degree axis are Computed Tomography scans taken at? • What areas of the body are CT scans the most beneficial to use on? • What two technologies does CT use to generate its 3D images? • Why are CT scans not used very often in veterinary medicine?
