  3. Developmental psychology • Developmental psychology: The branch of psychology that studies the patterns of growth and change that occur throughout life.

  4. Nature-nurture issue(1) • Nature-nurture issue: The issue of the degree to which environment and heredity influence behavior.

  5. Nature-nurture issue(2)These characteristics are not entirely determined by heredity, they are also affected by environmental factors

  6. Determining the relative influence of nature and nurture • Identical twins: twins who are genetically identical.

  7. Developmental research techniques • Cross-sectional research; • Longitudinal- research; • Sequential-research.

  8. Cross-sectional research • Cross-sectional research: A research method that compares people of different ages at the same point in time. • A cohort: is a group of people who grow up at similar times, in similar places, and in similar conditions.

  9. Longitudinal- research • Longitudinal- research: A research method that investigates behavior as participants age.

  10. Sequential-research • Sequential-research: A research method that combines cross-sectional and longitudinal research by considering a number of different age groups and examining them at several points in time.

  11. Conclusion • Developmental psychologists are interested in the effects of both nature and nurture on development. Environment and heredity both influence development, with genetic potentials generally establishing limits on environmental influences.
